Why are there a lot of B Comp picks that end up with higher draft picks than As?

B picks are "sandwich picks" between 1st/2nd round. Top 16 picks are protected so, if user 1-16 signs an A, the other teams gets a comp pick and a 2nd round pick.

So sometimes B picks might be better?

I prefer having a B player that I let go. Unless you have a star (that you probably don't want to lose) people are more likely to sign a Type B.

This makes no sense, because with an A, you can still get a comp pick too. From a draft pick perspective, losing a Type A is always better.

Unless no one signs him.

You completly skipped over the point I was making.

If you have a type A that is a piece of garbage or even a decent player, you don't get a pick if no one signs them.

With a type B, other owners are more likely to sign fringe players because it doesn't cost them anything.

A type A that no one cared to sign. Hence no pick.

and another one.

if either of these guys were a Type B, there is a much better chance someone would have signed them. A type A pick is no good if no one signs the player.

My confusion with it is I had an 83 overall pitcher that was signed and I was given picks 48 and 98 for him. He signed for $93 million over 5 years. A relief pitcher for someone else was signed for 1 year, $4.2 million and he is a 66 overall and that franchise was awarded the number 34 pick. There were 7 comp B picks before my Comp A. I would rather have the 34 than the 48 and 98.

Not sure on that one. Hopefully MikeT chimes in.

There's two things here. First, a CompB pick will never pick at 34. All the picks get re-ordered at some point so that all TypeA comp round picks come before the TypeB picks. That 48th pick you have will get bumped up and that 34th pick the other guy has will get bumped down (can't remember when, I think when draft boards come out). Second, as Mike already said, if he was signed by a team that finished in places 17-32 you would have gotten a pick in that range. Because a bottom half team signed him (or a bad team signed multiple TypeA's) you get that teams 2nd round pick instead.

So TypeA compensation nets two picks, sometimes one of those is in the later half of the 1st round (if a good team signed him) or in the 2nd round. You might also get bumped to the 3rd or 4th round if that team signed a bunch of TypeA guys because you can't all get compensated with the same second round pick.

Is this in a current season for one of your teams?

Yes current season for my Firebirds team in Uecker.

Don't worry about it. As brianplath pointed out a few posts ago, the comp picks get reordered as soon as the draft board gets released at around game 40 or so.

Ok that makes me feel better. I just assumed they reordered at the end of the Free agency period. Thanks

FA's retain their type A/B designations until the draft lists are released. That's why the reordering doesn't happen until then, because additional signings can change the order.
