Why am I attempting so many 3s? Topic

This is my first season with my Francis Marion D2 team in Rupp. Through 4 games, nearly 42% of my FGAs are from 3 point land. None of my players are set above 0 for shooting 3s, so I'm puzzled as to why they're attempting 3s at such a high frequency.

Fortunately, they're hitting than at a .378 rate, so it's not hurting me. But I'd like to understand why this is happening.

Could it be that this is just what the defenses are giving them as open shots?

Rhoden and Sharp set to -2?

Your SG should be at least +1 if not +2

Thanks, but that's not answering my question.

Do you have an "odd" team game plan settings? I see you're not playing from behind so that's not it.

Nope, I haven't done anything strange there. In fact, when winning late, I'm adjusting my 3 point shooting by -1.

Couple factors:

1. The game uses a PER/LP ratio to decide what type of shot the player wants to take. Porter, Hampton and Ryan will all take a lot of 3's if you don't tell them not to.

2. Porter takes the most shots and most of his shots are 3's, if you take him out, your team is at roughly 1/3.

3. Could be the defense's you face, if it's been a bunch of 2-3's or teams playing - defense that will cause more 3FGA as well.

Yeah it kind of does answer your question. You have guys taking 3s that shouldn't be taking 3s (Rhodan and Sharp have combined for 16 3s in 4 total games).

Look at your stats and look at who on your team is attempting 3s. It's more than you need to have. Set everyone to -2 except for your 3 or 4 shooters and you'll take fewer 3s. And you'll have better efficiency.

This is the answer. Especially number 1 is useful to keep in mind, it also applies when you have a guy with something like 80/90 LP/PER, and setting at zero results in proportionally fewer 3s than guys who are 20/70.

Thanks, this is what I was looking for. An explanation, rather than instructions.

Zorzii's answer was just telling me what changes to make without supplying any context.

Staying on topic is not zorzi's strength.

You really hate Zorzii don't you?

Let it go Mike.

Not really. Hate is awful strong. Especially on the internet.

However, if you want to let something go, quit responding to me EVERY DAMN TIME I say something about your favorites.

So you unnecessarily called out Zorzii for getting off topic because I asked you to let something go?

And he wasn't off topic. Maybe his advice was poor (debatable) but it was definitely on topic to the discussion.

I'm sure he'll do something else in the near future to make you feel like you need to stand up for the good of the forums but this wasn't one of those times.

I was on subject. It was a read between the lines answer or fill in the blanks. Let's talk about a recruiting cap

No, a question was asked and it was not answered. I think the OP made it clear than his question was not answered.

But good job riding into rescue your boy. Seems like you do that a lot. There might be a time when you feel like you need to stand up for your favorites but this wasn't one of those times.
