Being competitive in D1 Topic

I see big6 teams with consistently having players 90+ DEF. Which I believe when you are at that high level you need that. However in a mid major like Texas Christian (where I am now) Is it imperative to have 90+? Can I get by with a player being 70+ DEF and high other ratings like SPD BH PAS for a guard? For D2 I always would not recruit a player if he wasn't 60+ DEF but in D1 should I up my requirement to 70? 80? Should I force 90? Defense has always been my go-to as a coach if nothing else at least I am going to defend you good for 4 quarters.

70 minimum, shoot for 80, especially with man to man or zone. I prefer to drop ath requirements in a D1 mid than def, cause ath is a coveted stat.

this came up recently in another thread about types of players that can be successful...for the most part I want high DEF guys, but i would skimp on DEF for guys who can score, for sure, especially guards....and i would skimp on ATH for those players if they had high SPD, too.

very few teams get a whole starting five of 90+ def anyway

You're not winning championships with players in the 70's for defense but you can win a lot of games.

The goal will be to make the NT enough to eventually move to a big6 or build the program to be somewhat competitive. The dream has always been the big 10.

I think you could do it. There is a tremendous value in signing the guys that are just a notch below top 20 talent for very little effort.

Agreed, I'm in the process of wrapping up a guard over 70 DEF then will be 77PER 90+BH 90+ PASS 90+ SPD and he will be a minimum 74-76 DEF so he will be well over it. #25 rated PG.

This guy is a typical backup for me at D1. His final #'s will look something like:

60 ATH
87-90 SPD
77-80 DEF
98+ PER
81-87 BH
93 PASS

I don't remember but I am pretty sure I signed him for only AP's , maybe a CV or a HV or two.

The low ATH and DEF kept the top 20 teams away so I was able to get him pretty cheap and sink my resources into battling for a real stud.

What about taking a chance on a guard with potentials that look 90+ BH Pass PER and 80SPD however is DEF is 35 Very high. So he will be at least 65. I did go after one. He will be very serviceable but could be a big hole.

He's a career backup. If you get him cheap or late it's one thing but don't put a lot of energy into it.

I spent no $$ on him and informed of redshirt so I'll get 5 seasons out of him. Is it likely a 35 very high DEF will go over 80? I really only see that in LP and PER

no, green DEF is usually in the 30-37 range

probably will top out around 70. i feel like most green DEF aren't more than 40 potential. that's the non-data driven, absolutely unscientific answer from my recollections about my teams, though.

That makes sense then, thank you for all the help! I did also pickup 2 starting guards in this same recruiting class so he can become a career backup anyways. I'll just recruit a stud overtop of him.
