Either way, the point remains. You don't have the results to start making definitive statements on how to win in HD. 2 CC in 16 seasons.
CC is not a great indicator. I'd rather look at tourney success and whether you were able to build up a team from scratch.
It's a pretty good indicator on whether or not you can win your conference. Anyone can take a jacked D2 team in their second season, make a few tourneys and move to D1. Beating up on SIMAI to move up isn't that difficult. Unless you're going to tell me that SIMAI is really good now.

I've totally broken #1 at D3 and made the S16
Example: season 79 Grinnell in Crum. Average athleticism was 41, average defense was 47. I only had one guy with an athleticism >50, and that was a 51. Made the S16, albeit as a 12 seed pulling off a pair of upsets. You can do it with lots of shooting
The next season I'm pretty sure was below on both athleticism and defense as well and made the S16 as a 4 seed.
Those, however, were both under 2.0 when player ratings were lower at D3. It might be up to 50 now - i haven't tested that theory

For #2 - i find it greatly varies by scheme. At D3, in a flex offense, I find it tough to have guys with LP <90 become go-to scorers. In a motion offense, I find they can have much lower LP ratings and succeed
Really interesting. Thanks.

I deleted my off topic posts. I'd also like to know what you guys think of them. If you think they're wrong that's fine.
#1 is wrong and definitive. But I already said that before your hissyfit redlining tirade.

If there are absolutes on how to win in this game, the game is flawed.

1. If you want to go to the Sweet 16, you need 50 ATH/DE at DIII, 55 ATH/DE at DII, and 65 ATH/DE at DI AT THE WORST. If you want to make it consistently, add 5.

2. Incredible Ath and average-good LP goes a long *** way toward a good scorer.

3. High PER/BH/PA guys excel of the bench.

4. One of the best ways to have a good team every year is everyone can play great DE, and each player also excels at one of Offense, Distributing, or Rebouding.

5. The factor of surprise is your number one friend at DII and DIII.

6. Low Post in slashing guards is super-helpful.

Back on topic. My thoughts-

1. Prob a bit low for D1. Typically good teams do have at least 50 ath/def at D3 though. Not a must have but typical.

2. Mostly true at D3. I find this esp true for SF.

3. Scoring off the bench is a huge benefit and will usually be most efficient scorers. Def get a great 3 pt shooter coming off the bench. Makes a huge impact.

4. Not required for press. My guards are usually below avg defenders but they are fast and can score.

5. I like surprises.

6. High LP in athletic SF FTW

That didn't come out right. ward mostly posted nonsense. cubcub posted some decent guidelines but they came off as absolutes.

We can add in my Hood team in Rupp that i took over from a sim in season 93 as another counter to this:
Athleticism average: 43
Defense average: 36!!!!!!!!!!!
Made the S16 as a 4 seed
The thing with my teams that are counters: you need to have a ton of shooting in order to overcome the athleticism and defense deficiencies. Also, they played zone so i fouled less. I just abused the 3x 3 point shooters on my roster to have my offense drag me to the S16
This example is from 3.0
That being said - I'm a big believer in some of your other rules.
3) If you have a deep team, I'm a big fan of putting a strong scorer on the bench to carry those units
4) I try to follow the "everyone can play defense, and have one other skill" philosophy. Typically that leaves me with a PG who can pass, a SG and SF who can shoot, and a pair of bigs who can rebound
6) I've always wanted a guard with LP skills but have never ended up with one

Ha, thanks. I know it's a talented team, but I'm pretty sure if I was a better coach I could get more out of them. I'll feel like an epic failure if I don't get a sweet 16 out of that squad.
I'm no expert but looking at your roster it looks like a guard with really good BH/P would do you some good. Your team is averaging more TO's per game than assists.

I'm going to give my generic advice for the day.

I think people do not give enough value to BH and passing. Especially in certain offenses.

I see people recruiting bigs all the time with high Ath, Def, and Reb, but single digit in BH and pass. Just doesn't seem right.
