$70 Mil - 14 Nats, 88 Padres, 69 Astros
This team I spent the most time on. As always, looking for OBP+/OPS+/WHIP+. After finding teams with great values ('89 Expos with Raines/Bryn Smith), then, teams that had as close to $18 million in useful players as possible ('88 Mets had Ojeda/Sid/HoJo/Backman), I eventually realized I had to blend $18 million and get as many starters as possible. The '69 Astros had useable lineup guys in Morgan/Menke/Blefary/Edwards/Miller. Marty Martinez gives me a good utility player and just enough to cover my $18 million. The '14 Nats gives me plenty of value in the rotation with Zimerman/Roark/Fister. Soriano and Stammen give me 2 useable relievers. Ryan Zimmerman gives me another great value bench player. Last was the '88 Padres. Pretty sure I was looking for one more valuable SP, and found Eric Show. Gwynn will be my leadoff hitter if I can keep him from getting tired. Kruk/Ready/Thon give me relatively cheap guys who can hit some and play multiple positions. Leiper is cheap enough, and will probably close. Had plenty of cash leftover to fill the roster with 1 good SP (Honeycutt), and bunch of LR innings in the pen (Burdette, McAndrew, Nolasco). Not sure why I picked '06 Lugo, probably needed PA's at SS to go with Thon and an extra SB threat.

$90 Mil – Hitmen 08 Braves Clone 3
My plan for this team was to find a clone eligible at several different positions to help the lineup and hopefully one SP who could be cloned a bunch. I had two guys in mind. Since I’m pretending I want to win, went with the ’08 Braves after finding I could clone Chipper/Smoltz. (If it was purely to be different, I did have an interesting Brewers team with Molitor/Sutton/Fingers clones). The fact that Chipper switch hits is an additional bonus, and maybe the deciding factor. 5 Chippers solidified almost the entire lineup, just poor OF defense, weak third OF spot with Kotsay/Prado/Infante, and keep McCann lower in the lineup so he doesn’t get tired out. 3 Smoltz’s in the rotation are huge, 2 Smoltz’s in the bullpen makes it tolerable. Used the last clone for ’08 full Teix season, throw him in the cleanup spot.

$100 Mil – Hitmen Naps 05, 08, 09
When I can use deadballers, I always try to find a way to use ’02 Bernhard in my rotation due to his value. When I noted that the Philly team was generally horrible, I went with finding 3 Naps teams. Young/Joss/Bernhard/Moore give me an excellent rotation. Other than Berger, I just now realized my bullpen is terrible, and will give up hits. Hopefully the low HR/9 will keep it from becoming a disaster. The offense is pretty much Nap/Hickman/Flick/Bradley, and a bunch of guys who are useable, nothing special. Hopefully the SP carries this team.

$120 Mil – Franchise Soup
I didn’t think of which soup for this one, mostly just thought I would have an easier time building a Franchise Soup team than any of the others. It gives me the best chance to use my philosophy of high OBP+/OPS+/WHIP+, deadballer pitchers, and not dependent on the longball. Love my top 4 of Gore/Hamilton/Collins/Brouthers. Wagner and Jennings fill out the middle of the lineup well. Raines is my main speed guy. Freehan is my main HR guy and should keep teams from stealing 6 bases a game. Jack Clark fills in for Hamilton to rest him, and when the matchup is right. Went value in the rotation with Hendrix/Russell/Bernhard/Braxton. Eichhorn/Roberts/Adams, then some fillers in the bullpen.

Variable - Hitmen Only a “B”
I figured “A” fielding would be too expensive. However, I do like some kind of range in the OF. So “B” fielding it is. Maintained my strategy of OBP+/OPS+ with few HR’s, and mostly B+ range to try and help the pitchers out. McGraw/Gore will get on base a ton. Cobb/Morgan.Brouthers/Delahanty should provide enough XBH power to drive people in. Carroll/Appling will fill out the lineup. Morgan is pretty much the only power guy AND the only speed guy. There’s a litle bit of extra power, and a cheap pinch runner in Nixon on the bench. Rotation solid with Cicotte/Russell/Bernhard/Braxton. This is the best bullpen I’ve got by a mile, and Braxton will likely do some LR as well.

$140 Mil – Hitmen Doubles
Just based on prior experience, I have done well creating doubles teams in open leagues with Olympic Stadium. I don’t feel that a triples team gives one enough of an advantage, and HR’s may still be suppressed somewhat, even if there are no deadballers. Without the deadball era, I was allowed to get some HR hitters as well, and while Morgan is my only true basestealer, other guys have enough SB’s to keep opponents honest. I made sure there were a couple HR hitters on the bench when matchups allow. Rotation of Maddux/Wolff/Brown/Braxton will be my only high cap true 4 man rotation. Plenty of solid RP innings, with Rivera closing. Trying to keep HR down will be key.
