After some contemplation, and some softball, I've decided that you are right. Lincoln was willing to kill his own people to keep the USA intact. He felt that was best for the country. It also kept him in power.

Like Saddam. I bet Saddam got his gameplan against the Kurds from Lincoln's playbook.
To be fair, maybe he just thought a little culling would be good for the country.

Considering that the 100 years immediately after the Civil War resulted in the US leapfrogging ALL of the other industrial nations, it seems to have worked.

Probably why Saddam was using Lincoln's playbook. But we killed him before the full plan worked.

Oh, and by the way, FDR pretty much orchestrated the US entry into WW2. He knew about the Japanese plans in the Pacific, and basically sat on his hands until they crossed the line (which he probably though would be the Philippines, and not Hawaii).

Freeing 4 million slaves that the South was never going to give up was also cool.

Not never, but it would have been 50+ years, definitely

Mike, in your alternate reality, everything is perfect and there is always a perfect decision. Not in this reality. It worked out pretty OK, IMO

You're probably days away from being replaced by a microchip at your job and slavery would have lasted somewhere between 50+ years and eternity.

That's hilarious.

The South seceded and went to war over their right to own slaves. They weren't giving it up voluntarily any time soon.

No, you said "NEVER" not "any time soon".

Wait, so the guy who equated Lincoln to Saddam Hussein is going to try to give me **** for being slightly hyperbolic???
8/10/2017 12:43 PM
Holy cow, Lincoln = Saddam Hussein?

Am I the only guy blocking that idiot?
8/10/2017 12:45 PM

Mike, you are the one who said that the south would have changed their outlook on slavery in less than 4 years, and then talked about how it took 20+ years to change your outlook on gay people.
