If you cut a player during the pre-season, do you get any extra recruiting money for the current? Or do you only get the extra cash for the next season's recruiting?

You are only allowed to rescind from a few hours before RS2 begins to the end of RS2. You can't cut a player outside of that period.

Tuesday	12/12	2:00 AM		Player rescind scholarship start
		8:00 AM		Recruiting period 2 starts
		5:00 PM		Recruiting period 2 Attention Points processing starts
Thursday	12/14	10:59 PM		Player rescind scholarship end
		11:00 PM		Recruiting period 2 ends

As for resources, if you recruited the player (i.e. your name appears as the one who recruited the player on his player card), you will not get any resources in RS2.

From the FAQ:

You only get half of the resources for a scholarship opened due to an unfulfilled promise. Also, you will not get resources for rescinding the scholarship of a player you recruited.

so if i take over a sim ai recruited player then I would get the full allotment?

If on his player card (or on your team roster) it says "Signed by: SIM AI" or "Signed by: <InsertOtherCoachNameHere>, then you should get full resources if you rescind his scholarship. If however, it says "Signed by: tdiddy3" (this is usual case when simmy signs a recruit in RS1 and then you move to that team, it will automatically say you signed him even though you had nothing to do with recruiting that player), cutting that type of player won't get you anything.

Follow up on this thread... Does it matter what year that player is? Or how long you've been coaching the team? I took over a team this season, and there's a player who's a junior that SIM recruited and I want to cut him.
or hypothetically, if I cut a player (that I didn't recruit) in my second season with the team, thats still allowed?

Yes, your reputation won’t take a hit and you get extra recruiting/scouting dollars for cutting a SIM recruited player.
