Acceptable WE drop for redshirt? Topic

I tried to redshirt my freshman SF just before the season started - he didn't like it, and his WE dropped from 28 to 18. Would you keep the RS on him? He's not going to get any meaningful playing time this year, but 18 WE sounds dangerously low to me, so I'm tempted to remove it and just roll with a full squad.

no way

For me, it depends on how much potential growth he has. I signed a 17 WE because his currents were good enough to play b/u PG. He's improved 6 points(I think) after 19 games. Didn't expect him to improve much and I was right.

Closest I have to 28 is a 33 start(38 now). He's improved 63 points in 45ish games.

Just don't play him, then at the end of the season offer him a redshirt.

Not much difference between 28 and 18. So I would keep it on.

If it went from 70 to 60 would you keep it?

yes totally

70 to 60 I would absolutely keep it on - he'd be able to achieve strong growth each season (and offseason) either way. But not so much at 18 - his RS year will buy him improvement in IQ but not really in ratings.

Since 3.0 was launched, I did not redshirt one player. With the promises, it's almost impossible. I juggle the stats and the games played but not the redshirts.

I redshirt now, but very very rarely.

as to the original question... to me it just depends how you want your classes balanced.
if he was going to be zero help for this years team, and you like the idea of him being on the team 5 years from now,, then do it.

i guess the biggest tradeoff is he wont be quite as good in his 4th year as he would be if you didnt redshirt him.
hate to agree with mikey, but probably depends how much potential there is.

the problem with tissot idea , which , if it worked might allow him to improve slightly more this season, is the RS is already on... to do what tissot is talking about you have to take it off, and then reapply it at end of season and i think sometimes (or maybe all the time now?) the WE lost is worse on second try.

looking at your team, bh, i think i take it off and just play with 12. i dont really see a big upside to having him in that 5th year.

Thanks oldave, that's how I'm leaning too. I think the balancing of my classes outweighs the benefit of having him a 5th year. (He has good potentials but not enough where a 5th year is going to make enough of a difference.)

I'm guessing this is a result of consistently recruiting top prospects. I generally have at least one conservative low OVR (550 or less) high potential player that I'll redshirt if I have 3 or more scholarships, and more often than not those players end up being big time contributors by their Junior / Senior seasons, but I guess you can't really afford to do that with top 100 recruits.

Post the potentials and we'll have a better idea if it's worth it.
