Train the teachers. I'm sure there's plenty of them that are gun owners who would feel much safer carrying a handgun to work, especially after all these mass shootings where everyone is defenseless
I'd have to ask, but I'd be willing to bet most of the people I know who are teachers would not want to carry guns at school. They have enough on their plates without that.
Plus, the still would have to train the teachers. There is no money for that.
very small sample size, but every teacher I've asked so far (and answered) has said they would not want to carry guns at school. Granted, I don't think any of the people I've asked are already gun owners, but I don't know that for sure.
Ask gun owners. People who don't own guns are too scared to even touch them. The three teachers that died in Florida this week probably would wish there was somebody in that school that could take this kid down.
ask gun owners if they'd be willing to carry guns??? Kind of a stupid question, isn't it? I'm asking the teachers I know. I can't control whether they have guns or not.
If you think that's a stupid question then you are missing my point. If there's a handful of teachers in the school that ALREADY know how to use and store a gun responsibly.... Allow them to conceal and carry. I'm not suggesting you force every teacher. Trust me, if there's an active shooter in their school those that own guns would prefer to have the gun on them and not in a safe back home.... and those that don't own guns will be grateful to have these people around.

If you want to ask the right question, ask your teacher friends this "if there's an active shooter in your school would you prefer to have a handful of responsible gun owners nearby or to be a sitting duck until the police arrive?"
That is a loaded question.

If a teacher had a gun it would be a false sense of security. Kids might be less likely to hide, run, etc. I want my kid to feel insecure during a school shooting.

Teachers with guns also mean more bullets. Most casualties are from hallways, etc. Right? So more bullets means more chance of kids being hit with bullets.
Hardly a loaded question at all.... And it's not just any teacher, it's those that are trained to use and store guns responsibly.

Its odd that you're worried about your child's FEELINGS during an active shooter situation. WOW!!

I'm worried about my kids getting out alive.
You said the alternative was to be a sitting duck.

And no, I want my child to be safe.

So in the Florida shooting, the kids who got out alive were doing what?

Futile argument. What the kids who got out alive were?? who cares?

I care what they say NOW.......... and they say STOP allowing the legal purchase of military style attack rifles. NOBODY needs one of these weapons.
NO ONE!. Not a hunter. Not a man (or woman) seeking property and personal protection! Certainly NOT a 19 year old punk nutjob!

We can't stop guns entirely from getting into wrong hands, BUT we can limit the carnage by NOT allowing them MILITARY assault rifles!

I meant like what were the kids doing. While the shooting happened.

While I have no problem banning certain weapons, I'm also not delusional enough to think that will work.

A Mother Jones review of mass shootings from 1982 through 2012 found that 66 percent of the weapons were handguns, while just 14 percent would qualify as "assault weapons" under the definition used in a 2013 bill sponsored by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.). More recent data show a similar pattern.

  • Building administrator orders and announces “lockdown with intruder.” Be direct. DO NOT USE CODES. This announcement should be repeated several times.
  • Immediately direct all students, staff, and visitors into the nearest classroom or secured space.
  • Classes that are outside of the building SHOULD NOT enter the building.
  • Move outside classes to the primary evacuation site.
  • Lock classroom doors.
  • DO NOT lock exterior doors.
  • Move people away from the windows and doors. Keep all students sitting on the floor, and turn off the lights.
  • Take attendance of students in each classroom.
    • Teachers should prepare a list of missing and extra students in the room.
    • Teachers should prepare to take this list with them once they are directed to leave the classroom.
  • DO NOT respond to anyone at the door until “all clear” is announced.
  • Keep out of sight.
  • Be prepared to ignore any fire alarm activation, as the school will not be evacuated using this method.
  • When or if students are moved out of the classroom, assist them in moving as quietly and quickly as possible.
  • When the threat is over/the intruder has left the building, the building administrator announces “all clear.”

^^^sitting ducks. Like I said. I'd prefer my kid be hiding in a locked room with an armed teacher who knows how to a gun. If anyone enters that room through force they'd be dead, rather than my kid being dead.

Ok. So the kids are instructed to hide. Like I said, there is a false sense of security if a teacher has a gun. Also, the teacher would just be attracting the shooter to the area instead of hiding like they should be.

Why'd the jerk decide to do it in a school?

I guess because it's a giant box full of unprotected children.

And if the teacher doesn't have a gun the entire class dies... That's what happened in Sandy Hook. The dude went into each room and fired at them all huddled in the corner.

Ueah except they have more than 1 shot plusewise the teachers next door and the security guards, as soon as the left admits the safety of our children is more important than their political agenda of imposing their will, unconstitutionally, upon free honest law-abiding citizen neighbors by denying them the ability to protect themselves. IN OTHER WORDS: To impose upon friends and family the same death certificate they have forced upon our innocent school children.
