FA-to-be changes demand mid-season Topic

This guy apparently said all season that he would re-sign-- but when his owner went to sign him at the end of the season he refused, wanting to test the market.

I've never heard of that-- but look at his ratings this season; he's 29 yo and he gained a point of OVR in the last regular season cycle. I expect that's what caused him to change his demands.

Just thought it was worth putting out there since I hadn't seen it before.

I think the bigger question is that someone wanted to resign that player for 6 million? Geez.

His career ERA is about 0.30 better than park-adjusted NL average in >1300 IP, and he's got DUR/ST 33/72. That's a championship quality SP4, and depending on my budget situation I'd pay that much.

That what I was thinking. 1.2 WHIP, 3.5 ERA. I'll take it.

He just had a season of 2.29 ERA across 234 innings, that's a $20 million dollar season

I wouldn’t say it’s new, I’ve definitely had a player change his mind by the end if the season. IIRC it actually happened to me midseason, after the all star break. I have always seen it as a risk factor in waiting till end of season to extend a player.

20 million for a guy with crud splits, one exceptional pitch and 2 less then decent pitches? If I even looked at him, i’d Give him 5 at most. He’ll end his career with an ERA around 4.

Hockey, he’s my player. I would think the same but he has clearly outperformed his splits every season. That 98 pitch one obviously seems to be a big factor in making up for crappy splits. I’ve never had bother pitcher with that high of a pitch before. He’s up for the Cy Young this season.

I don’t know why he gained an extra point either at that age. Sometimes a fifth pitch will drop off to make an older player improve but not in this case.

The 98 P1 jumped way off the page for me too. And he can throw a lot of innings. I can't say anything definitively but I'm constantly evaluating the balance of pitch values vs. "splits and only splits". if anything, this is the type of player that justifies MikeT23's "never say never".

This guy was inconsistent as hell but peaked at 95/82 P1/2. Usually above league average. Except when he wasn't.

Don’t get me wrong, he’s by no means a bad player, but usually when a guy is having a season like that right before wanting a long term deal i’ll Usually contemplate if I can get a type A for him.

now, that being said, in my one league no one goes after free agents unless they are top grade superstars, so a lot of guys that are very good can often be had for next to nothing.

And in my other league owners would you their right arm if you flashed prospects in front of them.

Main reason why I feel like $6.5 is a bit much to resign this guy at.

I'm not convinced he's a $20 M player, but the fact that he had a $20M season proves that he's at least capable of it. $6M salary for $20M upside and $3M downside seems like an easy decision

If a pitcher is a righthander with 60 splits, but can put in innings, has good control and velocity, and has excellent pitches, I definitely consider him. And if - IF - $6 million is too much, then by how much? $1.3 million? I can deal with that if it happens to lock down the back end of a championship quality rotation.

What you can/will pay for a player is dependent on your situation.

I think of where I could put a guy. For 6 million he has to be at least an SP3. And for that he needs VsR at least 75 with 2 good pitches.

That being said I build my teams defence first and I skimp on offence. But for me, a guy like this would be LrA or LrB. I can’t spend 6 million on that. I’d go broke!
