You can get the top seed from a sim conference, but your margin for error is slim. It requires a top notch non conference schedule, and then you have to beat them all. Playing in a tough conference gives you more margin for error in non conference.
in my experience, it also depends on luck/sim team cycles. if the bulk of your sims are sub 200 rpi, forget about a top seed. if you have a few senior-heavy sim squads to add top 100 wins to your resume, then you have a shot.
I agree except that choosing the right Simmy coached teams for a top SOS is a skill and not based on luck. Tgblack consistently gets a top 10 non conference SOS every season by playing 8-9 Simmy coached teams in the Smith-Little E conference.
I should note first, I am talking about scheduling non-conference humans. If you need an elite non-conference schedule to cover for your weak conference, scheduling sims in non conference is not the way to get a top seed. I think BTH is talking more about the sims in your own conference, over which you have no control.
I do get the part about non-conference scheduling - especially of sims - being a skill. The more populated the world, the harder this is to pull off. A lot of guys are scheduling the same sims. And even if you’re careful and schedule at the last minute, if there are a lot of humans in a world, the ones who forget to schedule often end up assigned to host sims you chose. But in general, I think you’re right, schedule selection is a skill, and while some of it does come down to “luck”, as with everything in this game, the difference between success and mediocrity is in understanding the things you can control, and maximizing efficiency in those areas.
