You aren't going to convince a dev team that they should be writing special code for individual cases. Maybe the rules governing D assignment is flawed... but given that it is stat/voting outcome based and you are talking about a player who played in an era with limited stats and voted on slots... it is to be expected that there are flawed rating for that time.

Something normalization like they use in the baseball would be useful here for things like fg%, fouls, turnovers though.

How does Wilt have better D ratings 10-20 points higher than Russell when Russ lead the league in Def win shares every single season (and it wasn't even close). I am just curious honestly. What data could lead to that conclusion? I can find any.

Yeah, block and steal percentage are part of it... I also think there is some kind of size, fouls, rebounding component. I haven't spent much time trying to reverse engineer it though.

d rebounding used to be a big part of it (hence Troy Murphy 80 D rating an iteration or two ago) but has since been de-emphasized
