A couple rule questions:
-you state each draft the draftees get three year terms
-what about players added during add/drop?
-Any consideration to the following:
first round picks getting three year terms and second round picks two year terms (rounds three and above one year). Might give terms more flex in not having everyone for three full years.
-to clarify the “mid level exception” rule which reads more like a “buyout” if we are using nba terms: every year each team can drop one player with years left on contract?
-any deadline to apply bird rule? Or can I have zero asterisk players for three years and then decide who to extend essentially when declaring keepers going into “year 4” for whatever player I designate?
Thanks for the questions. I'm still waiting on admin to set up a private forum and I did not post all rules for the league here.
There will be an Add / Drop period. The player you pick up will assume the contract of the player you drop. The player you drop must have been on your roster for 1 year so the Add player will have a 1 or 2 year contract.
The general idea with the contracts is to have talent re-entering the draft pool on a regular basis. In theory, 1/3 of each franchise roster will be put back in the draft starting in season 2. I want to stick to 3 year contracts for all draft picks to start and evaluate as we go. The Add / Drop period and the mid-level exception help create roster flexibility. And yes the mid-level exception works like a buyout.
You do not have to extend any players under the Bird rule. If you choose to extend a player you can do it at any time during the contract including as you have described above.
