"According to a recent National Education Union survey, 80% of classroom teachers have seriously considered leaving the profession in the past 12 months because of their workload. And a recent online poll by Teacher Tapp has found that only half of teachers reckon they’ll still be in the job in 10 years.

Such losses are unsustainable for any profession, says Mary Bousted, joint general secretary of the National Education Union: there is a current shortfall of 30,000 in teacher numbers, and though this year the primary recruitment target was met, only 80% of the teachers needed for secondaries were enticed to join the profession. Bousted wants to see a statutory limit on teachers’ working hours, and a revision in what schools must measure."

you can only tell me how easy it is if you do it for two years, full-time. clearly, the love of knowledge, children, humanity and posterity isn't enough.

my best friend was the music director at a high school in a working class district. my brother taught computer science and economics at a prestigious private school. both left teaching, and vow never to return. figure that one out.

My police officer friends pay for some of their own stuff too. It’s just the cost of doing business unfortunately. It’s either that or having fewer teachers. They can choose to teach elsewhere or go to private schools as no one is forcing them to stay where they are. Right?
Private schools tend to pay less, at least in California.
Not here in MA.

We'll add that to the list of things CA has backwards. Nah, it will be easier to make a list of things they don't have backwards.

they have that backwards, too. you’re supposed to get him when you have a chance to win a championship, not at the tail end of his career.

If you really want to talk about a governmental profession that's underpaid, let's try police officers.

The average salary for a teacher in the US is $55,000 per year for essentially 9 months of work. The few meetings that you have to attend over the summer don't count.

The average salary for a police officer is $53,000 per year for 12 months and it is a MUCH more dangerous job.

That I agree with but police officers do get details especially in MA where they earn a lot of $$ for watching pothole repairs. Additionally my friends have jobs where they watch parking lots of car dealers and earn additional monies.

But I agree that they should be paid well.

On the flip side, what many athletes, actors and singers make is freakin' nuts. I know there's the whole "struggle to the top" part of those things, but the top is far too high. Plus, their ridiculous salaries are why it's so costly for others to attend sporting events, movies and concerts. I'm old enough to remember when it was affordable to go to all those things. Haven't attended a pro sporting event or concert in over 20 years and hit a movie maybe once a year. I get at least as much enjoyment by watching local kids' games and "struggling" singers, at a fraction of the price - and they appreciate it.

Supply/Demand economics.
7/31/2018 10:22 AM
I don't see that as the case at all. 20-30-40 years ago, watching athletics or "professional" singers was much, much harder to do. It's much, much simpler now, even to do in-person, because there are so many more. When something is easier to option and in a larger supply, isn't it supposed to be cheaper?

Dude can not make up his mind what side of the economic system he is for

My kids when to see Taylor Swift and it cost about $200 per ticket. They didn't have to pay that fee but if they wanted to see her they did. She was sold out at Foxboro Stadium, where the Pats play. So if she can get that much per ticket and these were not close to the most expensive ones, then she can certainly charge that amount. Now if only 25% of the stadium sold then she would have to lower the price to change the venue.

I go to a lot of sporting events through work but to take a family of 4 to a Celtics game will run you at least $500 if you get decent seats. Corporations buy up a lot of the seats at least they do in MA. I generally go to 1 Pats game, 9-10 Celtics games, 2-3 Bruins games, 1-2 Red Sox games per year.

That being said you can go watch AAA, AA or A baseball relatively cheaply. Same for the cape cod league baseball. There are to your point local bands that you can watch for less too but the major acts will cost you and they charge this much because they can.
