Yes, police officers are definitely underpaid. I don't think anyone here ever said differently.
That being said, I don't know how they do it in Alabama (or was it Georgia?) but my sister is a teacher, my niece is a teacher, my mother was a teacher, my father-in-law was a teacher (his claim to fame is flunked OJ Simpson twice in high school)I have several cousins and friends who were and are teachers. They all do and did more than "attend a few meetings over the summer. They have to work on lesson plans, get supplies (which they end up paying for many of them) Get their classrooms ready for the new year...and more. Maybe the teachers I know are more conscientious than most. I don't know. Just like any profession, there are good ones and bad ones.

Yes. There are definitely more responsibilities over a summer than just a few meetings, but it is still a very light and relaxing atmosphere. You get a month off over Christmas, about a month's worth of breaks throughout the school year and a 2 month summer. The responsibilities that you listed take 2-3 weeks out of a summer. It's definitely a 9 month out of the year job.

I guess the teachers I know must be really slow then! That's always possible!

@Wylie BDS' post is why I wrote this. You make logical, thought-out comments. Many people in your party do not as proven by BDS' dumbass comments. It's pretty obvious that many people on the left have a hatred for police officers. The Taint's and Wylie's are not the norm in the Democratic Party. You guys are definitely the exception.

without commenting on the dumbness of BDS' comments, there are plenty of people in both political parties who make dumb statements. Truthfully, while I am registered as a democrat, and more often than not, vote democrat, I'd prefer not to be categorized as a Democrat or a Republican or any other political party. I like to think I vote with my conscience rather than just following a specific party. If a candidate stands for the things I believe, I will vote for him/her regardless of what party they belong to.

I'm the same way. I think it's pretty obvious I'm a conservative, but I have no desire to be associated with the Republican Party.

I don't get this debate. No one forces people to choose a profession. Academics rarely make a lot of $ but people go into the field to make a difference. If they wanted to make money they would go into finance or law.

Teachers play a vital role in our nations future. I don't think it's unreasonable to want them to make a decent wage. I'm just arguing that they already make a fair amount, especially when you consider the benefits and amount of breaks.

So do firemen, nurses and plumbers. I mean yes, teachers matter but supply/demand economics control compensation. Teachers may also tutor to earn additional monies and teach summer classes but despite all that I doubt they will make $200k/year. If we are arguing the delta between $55k and $58k thats fine but what is the operational definition of "decent wage"?

Suffolk County, Long Island Cops used to be the highest paid in the nation.

Obviously it depends where you live. My niece is a teacher and lives and works in Cupertino, CA. If she wasn't living with her boyfriend, there's no way she would be able to live on her own. She's either have to live at home with her parents of find several roommates. If she was making what she makes and living in Iowa, she's be making a good salary, but if she worked and lived in Iowa she probably wouldn't make as much as she does in CA.(plus she would have to live and work in Iowa)
Someone might look at what my niece makes and say that is a decent salary, but not to live in Silacon Valley.

My best friend and his wife are teachers. They knew they could not afford to live in MA so they moved to NC and are living very comfortably. I understand where you are coming from.
