Maybe today but not in the 80's.
Right. With all of the hundreds of millions of dollars (at the time) out there to be made, only one group tried to challenge them and failed miserably, despite the NFL going through multiple strikes. The NFL was so vulnerable that nobody else was interested in all of that money. I mean, they were a sitting duck in the 80s but the rest of corporate, private investment, just the anonymous really rich dude America, decided collectively "Nah! Who wants hundreds of millions of dollars that are just begging to be taken?" And, thus, the NFL somehow survived. That's how we do it here in the USA. Of course, you being a capitalist, you inherently know that this is how private industry operates in a free enterprise system when the industry leader is vulnerable and hundreds of millions of dollars are there to be competed for.
Mercy. OK, that's enough sarcasm for today.
Of course the NFL would always be the top dog. The point I was making is that the USFL was in a unique position. Some teams could pay higher salaries than in the NFL, which attracted significant talent. Additionally, the games were played in the spring, which meant that they had no football competition. Would the league have lasted if Trump never got involved? Maybe. Did Trump almost single-handedly kill the league? Yes.
