Some great ideas so far, keep them coming!

That variable cap idea from rbow is very similar to any idea I've been playing around with. One way is to give bonus points // free wins, but another way is to change the multiplier you get per win. So, using 100M, you would get 1.00 points per win, while using 101M would give you 0.99 points per win, 90M would give you 1.10 points per win and using 110M would give you 0.90 points per win, etc.

Haven't played around with it enough to know what the right increases or decreases per million used would be
Multiplier is a good idea. One flaw was the differences weren't linear, $1M at low cap had a greater influnce than $1M at a higher cap. A little over $100M seemed to be the breakeven point where $1M = 1 Win. But there have been several salary changes since then so the results might be different. I remember shaybee threw us a curveball by entering a $35M team.

Salary tiers (would adjust based on cap, clearly)

For instance, you can have

1 player $200K-499,999
1 player $500K-999,999
1 player $1M-1,499,999
1 player $1.5M-1,999,999
1 player $2M-2,499,999
etc etc.

Or make it million-dollar ranges if you separate the hitters and pitchers.

I am a bit fan salary ladders, since they work at almost any cap.

We did something similar last year that I had run previously outside of the WISC, called Catchy Title Theme. It is basically a salary tier league but, rather than raw $ amounts, we used $/IP and $/PA thresholds.

I tried to create this as a theme league but it didn't take, but maybe it works here:

Borrowed from the 2018 WISC but with a twist. No owner in the tournament selected a base year from 1932-1964, so in this league you have to!

All other rules are the same.

$110M: Unique Season Twist
Pick a season from 1932-1964. Twist 25 players who are in the WIS database for that season to other seasons. If a player played in your chosen season but did not qualify for WIS, you can not use them. You must twist each of the 25 players to a unique season. No players can come from your chosen season.

Century Soup
$90m, No DH
Must pick two years exactly 100 year apart (ex. 1917, 2017). All players must be from those two years. At least $40M of salary from each of the two years. Ballpark must have been around during either of the two years.

High Salary/Low Salary Dup
$90m, $100m or $110m, could be with our without DH.
Each team must have only 12 players. One version must be over $5million, the other must be under $1M. One player must be chosen 3 times and the third version must have a salary over $8M.

Color Soup
$70m to $90m
All 25 players must have one of the following colors somewhere in their name: Red, Blue, Green, White, Black, Brown. Can be embedded in the name., e.g. Cal Eldred.

Playing with the all-star twist theme... pick a season, and every player must be an all-star in your chosen season. Lots of wasted PAs and IPs. Make it a 140m league that will play like a 100m league.

I suggest low-cap themes that are actually low-cap, not mid-cap.

The same with mid-cap themes that are actually mid-cap, not high-but-limited cap.

It's been way too much All-Star and HOF baseball to date.

Inspired by our ongoing draft...Increasing Salary Chain.
Player A is your lowest salaried guy...he must have played at least one season with Player B, who must be your next lowest salaried guy. Player B must have played at least one season with Player C, who must be your next lowest salaried guy, etc.

I'd probably recommend a 300K exception for this league but you could probably make it work without one.

High cap theme idea

No restrictions on players
Salary cap = (180-xy) million, where
x = number of distinct seasons on your 25 man roster, and
y = number of distinct franchises on your 25 man roster

wow - nice one.

Not sure if it's been done before, but I thought a exclusive blind auction "draft" would be fun. Every owner would submit a list of 25 players ranked 1-25 (25 being the highest rank). Each player would be assigned exclusively to the team that submitted the highest rank. Ties would be a wash and the player would return to the available pool. Next round each owner would submit a new list of ranked players from 1-X where X is the number of players remaining to roster (if 5 assigned in Round 1, then the owner would rank 1-20). Each round would proceed until every owner is assigned 25 exclusive players to build a $255M team from. Caveat would be that it would take quite a bit of work from the league manager.

We will be doing an auction in some form during Round 2 next year. This is a good proposal. There are a few others I am considering as well.

All 25 players must also have been an MLB head coach.

The Strongest Link - 130 M

Each position player must have accumulated 2 fWAR, 1 BsR ( fangraphs ), and 1 Def ( fangraphs ).

All Pitchers must have thrown at least 50 innings per 162 expected.

1920 - 2017 players only.

Stadium choice is limited to any stadium your highest fWAR player played in at any point in his career.

The best round 1 themes are ones where there is a lot of variability. This usually happens at the cap ranges from 80 to 100 million.

Any theme where you start with a single season team and modify it in some way (with twists and/or free agents). Or merging multiple single season teams into one. You get lots of variability with these types of themes.

Any theme where you have to go outside your comfort zone, i.e., albatross theme. For example, $75M theme where you must roster one $10+ million hitter.

How about a neutral ballpark theme? Must use WhatifSports Park. Or word it differently, i.e., you deduct $1 million from your salary cap for every point of ballpark effect. So if your park is +1, +2, 0, -3, -3, you would deduct $9 million (1+2+0+3+3) from your salary cap. This would essentially get most people playing in a neutral park, although not required. This can be applied to any theme, although a higher cap theme works better.

Any theme that prohibits or greatly reduces the use of cookies. This includes themes that limit seasons or requires minimum HR/9.

"Inside the Box' themes. We've done this before, setting up groups of players where you can take only one player from each group. It doesn't have to be 25 groups though. Maybe you group the most commonly selected players into 5 groups (you get to roster one player from group A, two from group B, three from group C, four from group D, five from Group E, and the remaining ten players from the field).

I know some don't like clones, but any kind of clone league where you get a bonus if you clone fewer players.

We've done bad defense leagues before. How about forcing everybody to have great defense. How do you build a roster to beat a team full of A+++ fielders and an A++ throwing arm behind the plate. How much can you skimp on innings? What ballpark should you play in?

I will add more thoughts later.
