I am all for substituting vocational training in place of community service, but if you are receiving payment you should be earning it. Getting a free check without giving anything back is not earning anything. Having to take care of kids is not a good reason to get out of work. Everyone that has children has to figure out to care for them while also working. It's part of adulthood.
You're just ignoring the fact that a lot of people on assistance are working. And they're poor. What exactly do they have to give?
And, if we're talking about a poor person staying home to take care of kids, have you paid for daycare before? It's between $600 and $1200 a month per kid. It's likely that someone on assistance is getting about the same amount. They can't pay for daycare.
This attitude of resentment towards poor people is weird. Like they're getting one over on the rest of us. Would you trade places with them? I wouldn't. Their lives generally suck.
