Releasing a Player Topic

If I release a player than has a $3M option for next season remaining, will ANY amount be removed from next season's payroll (to free up cash right now for FA extensions)?

You will be responsible for the whole contract unless someone claims him while on waivers. If the player clears waivers and is picked up, the signing team only has to pay the prorated league minimum the rest of this season. You are on the hook for the rest.

Your only hope is to trade him or have someone pick him up off waivers.

He means will it clear up money for next season because the player has a team/mutual option and the answer is yes you will have the money available.

This is correct; I have done this. Only the $3M will count against next year's payroll; the rest is freed up.
