[CANCELED] Increasing Salary Draft, 2018 Topic

This league gets more gimmicky each day. Something not worthy of the WISC in my opinion. Oh well.

I agree. For the record I'm opposed to trades but if people are going to make them I will too. I don't want to play with a disadvantage because I don't like the rules.

Ya I think the trade rbow and jfranco made is the only one that makes much sense........give up one early pick to acquire two early-ish picks.

This.
I'm worried that a handful of people (including myself) will get penalized a bunch of points to put them out of contention for the top spots overall. And then it becomes not who is the best at WIS but who was able to navigate a quirky draft the best.

Thanks magicdreamer for the proxy pick.

I'll admit I am a bit disappointed with how this draft has played out in the fact that it has the potential to get gimmicky. I definitely did not foresee it and expected people to be more conservative (hence my first few picks in the draft -- I essentially changed strategies after the Lajoie and Kershaw picks).

However, I look at the potential issues as largely self-inflicted (on myself as much as anyone else), due to strategy.

With that said, being a good strategist is not necessarily the same as being good at this game, and being good at the game is what we should focus on in future tournaments. We will probably not do this one again.

I'm clearly in the minority, but I would love a WISC that was all drafts, with various types of wrinkles (like this) that you would have to navigate. Maybe that's a different tournament altogether - maybe a WISDTC? But I saw these issues folks are dealing with from the onset and elected my strategy accordingly. Then again I'm the guy that never learned the difference between how Sparky uses Long A v. Setup B, who doesn't know how to use a Tandem, who leaves managerial settings as defaults every time, and who has never once fiddled with advanced settings (like hierarchies). But I like to draft.

I think it's the high cap that caused a lot of the problems. If you run this with a $100M or $120M cap, then everyone knows that if they jump ahead, they'll have a narrow window of players to pick from. And the worst case scenario is not really no players (unless you really hit a tight window) but bad or ill-fitting players. But with a high cap, you can literally run out of players.

Or it might be my fault for picking Kershaw. That's also possible.

I was thinking the exact same thing (about the salary cap idea, not the Kershaw pick)

It was always my plan to get crazy. It wouldn't make sense for anyone to let me go it alone. And I'm sure I wasn't the only one with that plan. If you hadn't lit the match, even assuming you did, it would have happened eventually anyway.

Time to get a shortstop that can play competent defense before they run out completely at a salary level I am at.

1921 Dave Bancroft $7,449,467

To save on overhead management will not be buying a glove for this guy

1923 Ken Williams $8,731,148

Things I love about this theme:
  • the opportunity to pick up points in a draft and not just in leagues of play
  • it's super-engaging (i'm on here constantly checking in)
  • actual caps will vary from team-to-team like real baseball
  • amount spent on roster may not correlate to the standings
  • I'm getting to use some different players (welcome to the team Davis and Brouthers!)
  • some of the best owners on here are flummoxed by this (I'm guessing it's the uncertainty?)
  • I love platoons, but not many themes really end up working out well that require positional platoons; this one will
  • NO PLAYER FATIGUE (I'm growing tired of this)
  • NO GREG MADDUX (I love him like the next guy, but man I starting to need some space)

Things I don't love about this draft:
  • too slow (how long did that first *lowest salary* round take?)
  • the uncertainty (i've no idea what my final team is going to look like and we're 11 rounds in!)
  • I could lose points (it's dangerous trying to stay competitive without losing any points)
  • I've discovered "advanced search" options (lol)
  • finding out that some of you have much bigger balls than I

Overall I like this theme. I think it's brilliant to include a draft as an opportunity to make up or lose points in the finals. That's clearly because I'm the last guy in, but I think i'd like it anyway.
