Thoughts on this kid.... Topic

So I took over a rebuilding team and as I've said in other recent threads just coming back to this game after a long layoff...curious what you think of this kid:

I think he could be my second best ML 2B (as well as playing some corner outfield/infield...resting my other guys, etc). I'm trying to put my best foot forward at the big league level while developing the prospects I inherited, etc...

Anyway - he's a 66 overall right now projected to an 83 though don't think he'll reach that. Good range and speed...just okay as a hitter (like I said right now he'd be a reserve - hoping for more growth on contact and VsR). So my question would be - do the guys develop better in the minors? If you "rush" them...do they suffer or have growth stunted? He jumped 11 points overall his first year (49-60) and has jumped from 60 to 66 this spring.

If he is going to develop any more, he'll develop fine and probably better at the BL level (assuming your BL coaches are better than what you have in AAA)

yeah that's what I was thinking. Right now the kid's at AA but I think prior owner was moving him too slowly too...I feel like the prior guy was trying to do a hard youth movement via farm system but also probably started neglecting the team (hence, him leaving the team up for grabs).

So I think he was on the track to a degree but also not paying attention didn't help things.

EDIT: also the guy I'd option in favor of this kid is 29 years old and overall 55 so he ain't getting any better.

Yes, like Vitamin_C said, players develop just fine at the BL level, probably better there than in the minors because of the higher coaching. The catch is that he must play to develop. If he is going to ride the pine at the BL level then you are better of leaving him down.

As for the specific player, he probably doesn't have a ton of growth left. He will pick up 2-4 points per category more than likely. I'm not sure where you are in your season, but you can probably find a much better option on the FA market for cheap. He will OPS under .600, potentially under .550 and his glove will more than likely not develop enough to be even close to a premier defender. Feel free to give him a shot, but I personally don't think that he is a big leaguer at all. Someone else can feel free to disagree with me.

As far as "rushing" players to big leagues, this doesn't really exist in terms of development. If a guy plays everyday, he will develop. Some people like to hold guys back to delay starting their arb clock (i'm not a big fan of this), but developmentally players are fine being called up young.

I took a quick glance at your organization, and I think your best bet is to try to find a 2B from outside of the organization (trade, FA, WW, etc...)

totally agree for the longer term. That's what I'm looking for. But for the "now", like I said...trying to put my best foot forward while exploring options. Thanks guys.

Yeah, I would agree that he is probably your best option currently in your organization.
