Controversial Topic: Which Offense Should I Use? Topic

I'm looking for many opinions on this question. I'm moving to another D3 (because they're a full conference). I'm changing the defense from man to zone. Which offense should I pair with zone? Which offense is best to you with zone? If you have any opinion or any input, please post. I need to make the right decision.

"Buzzzzzzzz" Wrong answer! Haha

it's possibly the right answer for general gameplay. But not for this particular question

I’m using zone. I’ve used it in the past and it allows me to go all in for recruits. Which offense with zone?

I like pairing Motion with Zone. If you're confident in your guards Triangle could work too.

Zone works with everything. Why wouldn’t you think so?

Has almost nothing to do what defense you're playing and has everything to do with your player offensive ratings, including stamina.

I assume it doesn’t work with fast break.

Well than, I guess what’re pros and cons of each offense (besides fast break) in terms of which players you target?

Offenses

Fastbreak

Summary
In a fastbreak offense the offensive team attempts to quickly push the ball to the other end of the court and score before the defense is able to set up.

Pros
Can lead to easy baskets, especially against a slower defense. Can wear down the opposing team and provide an advantage late in games.

Cons
Can lead to more turnovers, requires good stamina and a deep bench.

Triangle

Summary
Triangle is a set offense in which 3 players are spaced to form a triangle on one side of the court.

Pros
Doesn't require great athletes, creates good looks with good passing.

Cons
Since players in the triangle are interchangeable, can be easy to defend if the offense relies too heavily on 1 or 2 players.

Motion

Summary
Motion is an offense with no predetermined sequence of movement by the players or the basketball. Players move freely to open areas of the court which allows for greater flexibility than simply running diagrammed plays.

Pros
Players work as a team, often results in open shots or layups when the defense gambles.

Cons
More talented players aren't utilized as much as they could be, requires good ball handlers and passers.

Flex

Summary
The Flex is a variation of the motion offense in which all five players are interchangeable. The offense is taught to react in specific ways based on the defense.

Pros
Doesn't require a big presence inside to be effective, allows the offense to spread the floor and use quickness to penetrate to the basket or draw the defense in for open outside shots.

Cons
Requires good passing, speed and outside shooting.

That what is says for Hoops 101(above). I don't know exactly how it differs from real life basketball, but this is a good guide to go by.

Thanks. Any other opinions on which offenses people prefer (especially with zone) and why they prefer that offense?

I never was able to get triangle to work.

A lot of it depends on the type of player you think you're able to recruit. Maybe scout the players, see which ones are available and potentially base a decision off of that, since you're moving to a new team? If you have the right players, fastbreak might be the best. The one exception where a defense might match up with an offense is the fastbreak/fullcourt press combination. After that, it depends on the player.

As far as scoring efficiency, with the right players, for me it's fastbreak, motion, flex and triangle in that order.

You can put up big numbers with a flex, but doesn't seem to have the consistency as motion. Again, just from my experience.

I have won titles with zone/fastbreak and zone/triangle.
In Fastbreak you can run 10, still focus on ath/speed and def, and get more minutes out of your stars than if you were running any other set. You are trading minutes and the ability to double team for steals and possessions.

in triangle you can really maximize minutes, go ALL in for three STUDS, grab a couple Great D, ****** O players and take 2-3 walkons each season.

Flex and triangle are more natural fits with zone, IMO, but any can work.

My reasoning is along the the lines of what TJ said; in both flex and triangle, your offense works fine centered on just one or two scorers on the floor at a time. So you can recruit a team with 2-3 stars, and surround them with specialists - elite defenders, rebounders, distributors, shooters - with flaws that can make them much less expensive to recruit.

My own preference is flex with 3-2 and triangle with 2-3, because I find flex to be a little more efficient with more perimeter scoring, and triangle a little more efficient with more low post scoring. But that’s purely speculative, and your mileage may vary. I usually end up switching that around based on personnel anyway, which is another advantage of zone - roster flexibility.
