In my opinion:

The belief in some kind of "god", which predates organized religion, is the foundation of all morality, and in turn, all laws.

That's not to say that one needs to be a religious person to have a moral compass in the 21st century. Clearly, you don't. But the entire basis of "right and wrong", if you trace it back to our earliest ancestors, all comes down to having to answer eventually to a higher power, i.e. a god.

For sure throughout world history, but I wouldn't say that about the founding of our country. Our founders would have been powerful even if America had remained under British control. By revolting, they had a much larger risk of losing everything than they did of the possibility of gaining more power.

I think it’s tough to argue that the country, as a whole, is somehow less moral now than it was 50/100/200 years ago.

You should look at the election of 1800 and then get back to me. Dirty politics were going on since the founding of our country. Mainly in the guise of politicians using anonymous pen names in publications but back door deals and payments were heavily involved as well.

Once again, Japan's honor comes in the form of family. It doesn't necessarily have to be religion, but our moral code came through religion. When we lost that, we lost our sense of morality as a nation.

The murder rate is way down. In the 1970’s it was 10 per 100k people. It’s like 5 now.

The violent crime rate rate is nowhere near historic highs.

The idea that morality has decreased is flawed.

Yeah, I'll concede that. But we're talking 20 years after the war. In the years leading up to 1776, our leaders had much more to lose than to gain.
