Id expect with a good def to have him a low 1.4 whip possibly high 1.3 if he had a pull rating to leave him in coupled with a good def. He is below average in my opinion in control and splits, velocity and groundball. He would need to have outstanding pitches or control, vr,or vl in the high 80's to make up for his shortcomings. He is a great mop up guy due to his stamina and durability. FYI the clipboard worked.
Whenever I use the in-game clipboard I get this guy. I just used cut and paste on the player's web link above.
Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Santiago Carreras
Crazy I have never had an issue.

That $12.5m contract makes me sad.
Yep, the long-lasting effect of allowing a bad owner in a league.
Good owners sometimes make mistakes as well. I can not comment on to why he was signed to the bad contract.

You already beat me to it but I think the better title of this thread is 'Why did this player get 12+ million a year?

Well, that's why the owner that has him is in that situation. But my question is if I could expect better from that pitcher than what he is doing. If so, I could then take a solid prospect as compensation for eating the bad contract. Paying a guy $12M when he's worth $6M is one thing...paying $12M when he should be in AAA is another.

He's got three seasons left on that contract. I would only eat that contract if I were receiving an excellent prospect, top half of first round, sure fire stud.

If his health were lower I could 'break' him.

I don't think AAA. Honestly I look at that pitcher and I think if he was making $3 million........ maybe even $5 million I could make him work in a pitcher park with a good catcher. I'd probably swap him between my SP5 and my LrB/Mop depending on the streaks he goes through. With his Stamina and Durability he could (with a big emphasis on COULD) pitch 300 innings so you know he is never going to be burnt out. When he gets hot I would consider having him start with a pull of 5 in tandem with a leftie that dominates against right handed hitting. Guys like this can fill good roles on any team but for the right price.

Maybe an owner gave him the contract because when he was DITR - he had higher projections at the time of signing - but never came close to them.

Possibly, but it's not very wise to give a long-term contract to a guy based on projected ratings. It's even less wise to give a long-term contract to a 26 year old with 7 sevens of pro experience a long-term contract based on projected ratings.

You can't sugarcoat it; that's among the very worst contracts out there. He's a replacement value pitcher. There are worse things you can do than keeping him around to eat low-leverage innings when he's cheap. There is no roster on which I'd pay him first year arb money; the minute he gets over $400K you replace him in Rule 5. $63M over 5 seasons? Ouch.

As for how he got the contract-- he was released by his previous owner at age 26, probably because he was arb-eligible for the first time and that owner didn't want to pay him $1.4M or whatever he was asking, preferring to replace him in Rule 5. Because his OVR is inflated by very high DUR/ST, and because FA demands are based on OVR, he must have asked for something like $5M a year for 4 years in FA.

At that point, either:
  1. A very new owner who was just missing the fundamentals of the game offered him an essentially random contract right off the bat, or
  2. Even scarier to think about, there was a bidding war over him to push him to that contract.

That's why in my first post I said "must be serious competition for pitching in that league." Took the high road LOL.

Nothing elite and everything average. If he had either an elite split or a high 80s control, he would be much better. He is one of those guys that you might sign at the end of free agency for 1.2 mill a year in hopes that he has a career year.

The owner who gave him the contract was a 100+ season vet.

With a .413 win % and only 13 playoff appearances.

Huh Mike Brown plays HBD.
