I can jump ahead: 1935 - $3,868,702

(Joe Kuhel)

I can skip barracuda3 and select 1985 Lonnie Smith (KC partial). $2,494,202.

He's got a couple of real nice teammate options, if I can fit them in salary wise.

The really fun part of the 16x16 draft, in my opinion, are these later rounds where seemingly meaningless players are critical to the entire roster configuration. For example up until my last pick, I wasn't sure who I was using at 3B for my team. (Heck, I still may not use Brett). And missing out on a potential cheap season of a player late in the draft could derail your entire roster-build up to that point. With all the expensive dead weight in this version, I would expect multiple teammates to be at or near minimum price (or else people are simply going to actually use the crappy expensive versions of Lolich, Weyhing, Powell). I know if I roster both '85 Brett and '36 Gehringer, I will have to take a couple of <$300K teammates.

I can jump ahead: 1901 Jack Powell $8,863,004

It's definitely a jigsaw puzzle at this point. I am sitting with 8 teammate positions filled and $19M left to spend with 5 draftees to go. I think I can get away with spending about $15M on the 5, so I might not need any cheap teammates at all. I've currently got about 1400 innings that are not Powell and Weyhing, but I wouldn't mind reducing my reliance on Lolich and Alexander, too. And I have no idea who's on 3rd yet either. I've been writing up my round-by-round analysis as I go to track my thought process. I love that part of this league. Just don't ask me if I have a competitive team, because I have no idea how everyone will end up in terms of effective salary. My assumption is most people end up with $100-110M of players they actually plan to use.

The first two times I tried drafts like this one I was pretty good at them. This time I can't figure anything out. Last round I was all set to take the 1899 Cy Young, but I thought for sure that when moses_k took his Powell there would be a run on the few borderline usable Powells left (and yes, I'm using my crappy Powell, and Lolich). So, of course, I take a Powell and no one else does, and the best Young available goes with the next pick.

I also vastly underestimated how much people would care about which version of Ted Williams they would get. I figured that'd be one of the last decisions that people would make, because they're almost all good. But I suppose that there are two ways to get 700 PAs of "Ted Williams". Draft a 700 PA Ted Williams season (that ship has long since sailed), or draft a 400 PA Ted Williams season and (the teammate of) a guy who for one magical 300 PA season hit very much like Ted Williams.

Doyle Alexander, 1979 Rangers, $2,561,239

Sure, my way wastes and extra $500k on Alexander and takes up a teammate slot, but I was able to get my guys much later in the draft. In fact, it's conceivable that Williams will be my last pick. I'll have that to keep me warm when my team goes 72-90.

So you could say you're taking a Gamble here?
