Seems like old times as we wait on pini to make the final pick of the round.
This does in fact feel a lot like old times, HAHA

Well, my OF defense is going to be less horrifying now.

Damn, lot's of crap talking by newer members to the draft / league. If you have an issue with my not picking over the weekend, you can feel free to email me directly, or hell, even call me if you would like to have THAT type of conversation. Just for you impatient younger turds, Yes, I have 2 kids, yes Dad duty takes up a lot of my time on weekends, & I also coach my son's travel ball baseball team as well as a local High School team. Weekends are NEVER timed for this draft as my good friends / colleagues of this league have mentioned (I very much appreciate you veterans that made a stand for me). Sorry that whatifsports isn't my main focus especially over a holiday weekend, where I can spend time with my family during a time in the year I become a "part time Dad / Husband". Picking shortly
It's all good, pini. I figured that's what was up.

And that's the end of the second round. Get me your final keeper ASAP if you haven't already.

Has there ever been 4 Pirates taken in the first 2 rounds?
Other than Stargell, I have better players? Seriously, do you think Losing Giles & Mccutchen - Hurt , they wouldn't play over Moreno, Bonds & Parker? Why would I need Reuschel, when I have Gibson, Messersmith, Blass & Candelaria - DO I need another SP? Gibson & Messersmith can start 100 games between them?

I have lost 4 players that wouldn't have a place on my team anyway?

So Reuschel's best season is better than either Blass or Candelaria and will perform accordingly. Not needing Willie Stargell sure is a take as well. In my opinion, you protected one player worth protecting - two if we stretch it to include Parker. The Pirates just made the playoffs last season and are about to turn in a 100+ loss campaign.

I understand that none of those players would have made your roster, but most Rule V owners are mystified as to why that is the case. Let me explain:

Given a choice, most Rule V owners would start Andrew McCutchen or Brian Giles over Omar Moreno. Even if you prefer Omar Moreno to both of those players, it made no sense to use a first round protection on him when he was at little risk of getting stolen in the first round. Even if he did get stolen somehow, Andrew McCutchen or Brian Giles were great "backup" options.

The same goes for Steve Blass vs. Rick Reuschel.

To summarize, it is not only the odd choices, but the even more mystifying choice to protect players that were at zero risk of being stolen, particularly when there are "backup" options that most other owners perceive as simply superior options, that is confusing everyone who follows this draft.

Personally, I think goodbeef has outdone himself. This Pirates team might win fewer games than any other team he has had so far, and that's saying something.

I think I read somewhere, in a wis blog, that Candelaria & Blass are 2 of the most cost/performance SP in wis & that most of the teams that Candelaria is ON, for some reason, WIN wis championships? Go Figure?

Maddux & Pedro have salaries that are, quite Frankly getting TOO HIGH & are un-affordable in most leagues? In most leagues over 200M cap, they are out classed by Cobb, Lajoie, Hornsby, Gehrig & Ruth? ie, they cant compete with the BIG BOYS!

I for one am most curious as to how this is going to turn out. I also want to thank everyone for not taking JD Martinez. I have been wanting to try out the 2018 version of him and Mookie since the update came out. Ergo that is why I took the Red Sox. Interested to see how they normalize against such studs as Blass and Candyman.

To the first point: They may be effective pitchers in low cap (<$80m) leagues. The Rule V Salary Cap is $120 million, which is too high for them to be effective (this is particularly true for Steve Blass). Even then, the idea behind drafting them would be to save money on pitching to spend more on hitting. Due to the roster restrictions of Rule V (players from one franchise + 3 steals from other franchises), this doesn't work very well.

Your second point is actually quite true for low to mid cap leagues. Greg Maddux and Pedro Martinez are not cost efficient (although they are effective pitchers). However, the reasons not to roster them do not apply to Rule V for reasons I'm about to explain:

#1: In most low to mid cap leagues, Deadballers (Pitchers before 1920) provide performance almost as good for less salary, while splurging on Greg Maddux and Pedro Martinez prevents spending on decent hitting.

#2: Rule V has a $120 million salary cap, and in addition has roster restrictions (franchise players + 3 steals) that prevents an owner from rostering players more efficient for the salary cap than Pedro Martinez and Greg Maddux. Since both pitchers are highly effective, they are highly useful pitchers in Rule V. Also, Deadballers are not eligible for Rule V.
