yeah, I was actually glad when Baines got in. it was so outrageous I could safely not pay attention to the process anymore and avoid getting angry every year.
This.

The Hall has always had some terrible selections (it's not recent phenomenon), but for someone like Baines to get elected, in such a crony-ridden process, really makes the whole thing a joke.

A Hall of Fame that includes Jesse Haines, Rick Ferrell, Chick Hafey, Jake Beckley, George Kell and George Kelly, Phil Rizzuto, Red Faber, Travis Jackson, Freddie Lindstrom, Rube Marquard, etc, etc, etc...but NOT Bonds and Clemens....is already meaningless. But most of those guys were elected 25-50 years ago. The election of Baines is just silly. The Hall of Fame is not to be taken seriously.

for the steroid years the clemens/bonds stats were fake....clemens would have been retired except for the steroids..he was finished.
i hear you about undeservings but clemens / bonds disqualified themselves imo.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that dino27.

Contrarian, you’re right about many of those plsyers in the Hall with shaky credentials. Baines was a veyeran’s committee selection. Many of the other names you mention selected by earlier veterans committee referred to at one as The Old -Timers Committee. Frankie Frisch at one time headed that committee and made sure some of his old teammates made it in to the Hall. Travis Jackson, Lindstrom, High Pockets Kelly and I think Dave Bancroft we’re part of that group. That group is sometime referred to “Friends of Frisch”.

now that Baines is in the Hall, pretty much everyone who performed "good but not great" can get in. In other words, who really cares about the watered down HOF. Baines in, but McGriff isn't? That alone tells me everything I want to know about the voters and their biased ways. Anotehr thing that's gotten "stupid" about the hall voters is there "no 100%" rule. IMO, the Hall lost its way several years ago.
Baines was the 6th best player on a 6 player ballot. If they elected Will Clark or Albert Belle most fans would be fine with it!

"Martinez's Hall of Fame classmates certainly couldn't get him out. The slugger was 11-for-19 (.579) lifetime against Rivera, 23-for-75 (.307) with five homers against Mussina and 8-for-18 (.444) against Halladay."

raker!

Still no Larry Walker or Billy the Kid.

Unless they’re saving Walker to go in with Helton, then I wouldn’t be mad

Also had a glimmer of hope Lance Berkman would sneak in on the back of a ballot in his later eligible years. Those were crushed

2020 is Walker's final appearance on the BBWAA ballot. Judging by the increase in support, I would expect him to get elected along with Jeter. The backlog got seriously unclogged yesterday!

Still going to be a lot of 10 player ballots next year:

1) Derek Jeter
2) Larry Walker
3) Barry Bonds
4) Roger Clemens
5) Curt Schilling
6) Billy Wagner
7) Todd Helton
8) Sammy Sosa
9) Scott Rolen
10) Pick your poison: Sheffield/Manny/Andruw Jones/Kent/Giambi/Cliff Lee/Alfonso Soriano/Pettitte/Abreu/Vizquel

i would never allow rose in or the steroids guys.......betting on baseball as a mgr......no way.
i remember when clemens would take off seasons to get needled up....and then have a great season...cheated.
bonds - cheated......
im no rebel on this subject...ruining records is esp harmful to the game.....they should not get in.
there has always been cheating in baseball. You think Mantle, Mays , Aaron and the guys from the 60s and 70s never took greenies? How is that any different? Greenies and steroids are both performance enhancing drugs. Both Bonds and Clemens had hall of fame numbers before they ever took a steroid. They should be in. Especially since there's no wway to prove no one else admitted to the Hall never did steroids. Pretty sure some did. Bagwell??? Piazza??? Pudge???

because Sosa did not have Hall of Famer numbers before he took steroids, Clemens and Bonds did.

the greenies and sreroids are veryvery different...greenies make you awake like coffee...if the 60s and 70s players did not stay out late they would not have taken greenies.
steroids allow you to have super abilities you could not have without them....much different....greenies do not take you beyond your normal abilities.....it offsets the hangover or tiredness when you do not get a good night's sleep.
greenies and steroids are not equal.
