20 -40 billion less from 700 billion is not going to cause the collapse of the usa.
the people also need to be strong.
The first part of your post I'll leave alone. We could have endless semanitcal differences there.

The second part is absolutely true. It could be argued that cultural decay (or whatever represents national unity) is just as damaging as outright military/economic decay. History supports that theory in spades.
i am also a big believer that human behavior has patterns and those who do not study and learn from history are doomed to repeat the failures.
Yep, this is why it is so scary when people say "I don't care about our freedoms." Protecting freedoms should be one of our top priorities, because history tells us that they can disappear very quickly and it has never been a pretty sight when they're gone.

You know it's bad when your only argument is a slippery slope argument.

That's a terrible fallacy.

Is this directed towards me or strikeout? Just curious...

Please go back and learn history. It is a very slippery slope when freedoms are stripped. You take them for granted. You won't be saying it's a fallacy when you're living in North Korea.

Also, name one country in the world that has been around for a significant amount of time, we'll say 300 years for consistency, that has not become tyrannical at some point in their history. If you can name one, then you can call my statement a fallacy. If you cannot, then you need to reevaluate your views on not caring about freedoms.

"Experience hath shown, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny."

-Thomas Jefferson

Do you think Thomas Jefferson thought it was a "slippery-slope argument"?

I obviously don't support us becoming North Korea, but it takes more than a small reduction of freedoms to go down that path. That is silly.

Modern Liechtenstein?

Formed on January 23, 1719...just qualifies under the 300 year rule.

You and many other young people have a very, very dangerous world view. History disagrees with you. At some point, America will learn this lesson the hard way. I just hope that I am long gone when it happens.

so if we spent more money at home and built a more moral country at home we might be more powerful today.....impossible to say that isnt true.
Since morality is subjective how does one build a more moral country? By redlining those who have opposing views?

Education and infrastructure are two.

Proportional paying is better than just paying the same amount.
yeah, but the public education system and the infrastructure in this ountry have been going downhill for a while. Unfortunately, that is not where most of our taxes are going.
Well, yeah, but those are still valid arguments.

If it suits you, a lot of taxpayer money goes to the military.

Interesting question:
Should you be able to conscientiously object to your tax money going to the military?
For sure. You can consciencely object to your tax dollars going to anything. It would be pointless as the majority of the country realize the necessity of a military, but you can object to whatever you want.
of course it is necessary to have a military, but I question whether it is necessary to spend that much on it.. Also, I could be wrong, but I think tan was asking if it is legal to object to takes going to the military by not paying said taxes. I don 't think anyone likes paying taxes, regardless of what they pay for.
Yeah, we could definitely cut the military budget by a significant portion and still have just as strong of a military.
We are all in agreement here.
Nope. That post was idiotic. Military budget is just fine we need to cut entitlements.

Great. I'd rather take that risk than live in anarchy.

Wait, so having God-given freedoms leads to anarchy? Is that your claim? I'm confused.
