When my parents came to this country they had $100 and didn’t speak the language. They did OK. I dont but bad lucks privilege bullshit.
The essence of privilege.

"I (or someone) did fine. Why can't everyone just do that?"
LOL they weren’t privileged. Learn to read.
No, I’m calling you privileged.
LOL

How am I privileged? I was living with them!
You’re missing the point. Arguing that person X did Y so anyone should be able to do Y is dumb. Not everyone has the same life/luck/privilege/opportunity.
My point is very few had it as tough as they did and they did just fine. You're dumb because you cannot grasp that concept. The military takes most people. You grow up in northern Maine with limited prospects. Join the military and earn a skill and some money for college. Doesn't seem overly difficult to me. Ad Hominem. You're clueless about life. Honestly clueless. And you're a liar.
Well, let's see:

My point is very few had it as tough as they did and they did just fine.

My point is that plenty of people have had it just as hard or worse and did not do just fine. So congrats to your parents, they are the exception, not the rule.

You're dumb because you cannot grasp that concept

The "concept" that your parents made it? Yeah, I get that. Again, the point isn't that your parents didn't make it. The point is that most exceptionally poor people don't.

The military takes most people.

Sure, that's an option for some people. It's not an option, for example, for a young single mom or someone with a criminal record.

Doesn't seem overly difficult to me. Ad Hominem. You're clueless about life. Honestly clueless. And you're a liar.

Escaping poverty doesn't seem "overly difficult" to you because you're a ******* idiot who has lived a privileged, sheltered life.
LOL - how was it privileged and sheltered when my parents were poor and didn't speak English and I have worked since I was 13? Don't be a single parent. No one forces people to do that. Don't be a criminal. Your response is flawed. Explain to me how my life was privileged please? By the time my dad made any real money I was 18 and in college, where I worked full time as well. I'd love to hear this.
Anyone who thinks it's not "overly difficult" to escape poverty has never had to actually escape poverty themselves.

Maybe your parents did. But you didn't.
So I didn't grow up with them? LOL. I was living rich while they struggled? You're dumb.
Sure, you were a kid when they were poor. I'm sure that wasn't fun. But you didn't lift them out of poverty. You went away to school, their financial situation improved, and you graduated college and went on with your life.
2/21/2019 4:01 PM
Except it is fluid. Person A may be in poverty and get out and then Person B loses their job and moves into poverty. So Person A has escaped. Your view is simplistic.

The exit rate from poverty is 56% after just one year. The data is fluid.

So how did it make me "priveleged" as you say. I never said I lifted them out. They lifted themselves out. I went to a school with a Co-op program so that I could go to school and work to help pay for school and living expenses. I also worked through college. I am not sure where you see my privilege, please point it out to me.

Yes. 98% per the Brookings Institute actually. They are definitely able. I believe KO agrees with me. The key is fewer Gov't programs and not more.
2/21/2019 4:21 PM
And I am still waiting. How was I privileged? Please explain. You stated that multiple times.

I actually agree with BL on this one, I know tons of people who have had to escape poverty, thru my dad.
  1. Graduate HS
  2. Get a job
  3. Don't become a single parent
Road map.
Doesn't always work.

Still not equal opportunity.

2/21/2019 4:31 PM
No one has equal opportunity. I never got an opportunity to play for the Celtics. It works 98% of the time. Not terrible. A+. You don't have any suggestions. You just criticize. Not very helpful. Then again you went to college to "have a good time". Maybe you should have studied economics?
2/21/2019 4:32 PM
Lol.

I do have suggestions. More grassroots programs to work with people individually. Invest in education. Churches and such are useful.
2/21/2019 4:37 PM
OK so we agree that from an early age, chuches and schools should preach the mantra of getting an education, graduation HS and not becoming a single parent? Correct?

Everyone is born with equal rights but opportunities will never be equal.

Stop with the equal opportunity. There will never be equal opportunity. I don't have the opportunities that other people have. I have more opportunity than some. I can ***** about the people with a head start or I go to work and make careful choices that propel me. Not being poor is easy. Getting rich is hard. CCCP's road map works. The problem is that people don't follow the road mad and then wonder why they're poor.

That is true.

But it isn't as simple as saying 'It's easy to get out of poverty' and 'The people who work the hardest have the most money'

#1, which is the key to the argument, is not always a choice. Your list makes an erroneous assumption right out of the gate. The middle class view HS graduation as an accomplishment and a stepping stone to greater things. The lower class is more interested in basic needs like eating, having a place to live and owning clothes that aren't falling apart.

Many poor don't choose to drop out of HS. Those who are truly poor (not people wearing Jordans and texting on their phones) often drop out of school because the family can't make it without an additional full-time income...or because of drug and alcohol abuse either personally or within the family, because of failing grades since there is no place to study and no (intellectual) environment or support network at home to help you with coursework, because of pregnancy or disease or fatigue, because the gang on your block is recruiting you and a hundred other reasons.

With all due respect, your argument is specious.
2/21/2019 5:22 PM
@Tang. Stop living in a world of exceptions. We are generalizing here. We are using the general rule. The people who are self-made wealthy worked the hardest. The people who live in poverty their whole life have made bad choices.
