Can a free agent signee with no minor league options be assigned to the minor leagues once he is signed? Or do you have to put him on the major league roster and then waive him to pass him down to the minors?

You have to put him on your ML roster, then try to clear him through waivers.

And remember if he has five years MLB experience, he can refuse assignment to the minors and elect to become a free agent again.

I'm pretty sure you don't have to add him to the MLB roster to waive him. I think you can waive him while he is assigned.

You don't have to assign him. You can waive him immediately. Waive him at night before midnight so that he is only on waivers for just over 24 hours.
