This guys speed is the only explanation I can think for his success. He has 46 infield singles in his short career. If you turn those into outs it puts his career average at .287. I have always summed up his numbers as SSS, but he continues to perform.

Edit: He does play in a league where it is not uncommon to see AAA caliber pitching at the BL level. That has also played a role, but he still shouldn't be putting up HoF caliber numbers.

Player Profile: Johnny Hernandez - Hardball Dynasty Baseball | WhatIfSports Has been a pleasant surprise this season. Rule 5 draftee a few back and had been in the minors most of the time. Spent some time on the 60 DL and got his speed, range up to where it is now. Meant to be. 20 game player before being waived but he has been at the top of the lineup for a while now and is a plus CF. Speed and SB have a lot to do with it for sure.

Man!

How many infield hits does this guy have. I have looked at some players that have 90+ speed and 90+ contact and they have consistently gotten 20 infield hits per season. Twenty extra hits over a 600 At bat season is .03333 extra batting average. I had no idea that this added this much value. Your guy doesn't have the contact rating to get the consistent 20 infield hits a season, but I am curios where he is at.

He has 10 IFH out of his 33 total hits with only 4 Extra base hits. 3 bunt hits, do those count in the IFH’s? I would think so.

he’s 3rd on my team in RC/27 at 5.63

he had 20 in season 34 with 325 AB’s on 88 hits (77 singles) and his speed was only 90 then.

I have been placing more value on extra batting eye as opposed to contact and speed. I have a lot of teams that are near the top of the league in grounding into double plays. Maybe I need to mix and match more. It seems that speed has a lot more value that I originally thought.

Be careful on that one, contact does lead to double plays. I personally would rather strikeouts than contact at certain spots in the order.

It may make more analytical sense long term to have a guy strong out as opposed to hit a ground ball, but there's not much worse than reading the play-by-play and having runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out and your 4-hole strikes out.

Except having the bases loaded with one out and your 4-hole hits into a DP.

Seriously-- there isn't a dime's worth of difference, long term. Ground outs also advance runners... the Bill James simulation study that's often cited in defense of Ks showed that Ks were better than groundouts overall but by an unbelievably tiny margin. I don't think it's worth investing energy in hitters that do or don't strikeout vs. groundout... spend that time finding players who don't make outs in the first place.

A long time ago I read that for steals need to be higher than 72% to be worth it. Bottom line, steal you might score. A CS you won't score. Pretty basic ;-)

the other thing you find is super fast guys won't ground into very many double plays. It takes a lot to throw out a 99 runner. They will ground into very few double plays even if they constantly hit it on the ground.
