One accomplishment I'm not sure anyone has done is to win a D1, D2, and D3 title in the same world. Not sure it qualifies as Mt Rushmore status but I think it'd be cool feat to pull off.
I would like to know if this is the case. It might be a fun thing to strive toward.
I know gillispie says it's been done, and he's probably right, but what made me think of this was it was a topic in the forums a few years ago and no one could find an example of a coach that had won a title at every division in the same world. I can only check Phelan and Crum's histories as those are the only worlds I'm in and I don't think anyone has done it there. Now, back in the day there were aliases galore and I don't remember all of them so if it was done in either of those worlds it was with a coach using multiple names.
Gil or anyone else, are we talking about title at D3, D2, D1 under same username and in same world?
I didnt think it had been done, as crazy as that seems. Seems like theres 10 or 20 great coaches who could go back to d2 or d3 and do it with minimal effort, but i didnt think it had been done.
ive been trying to get my d2 in tark for a while. its kind of pathetic really.
even more pathetic is that after getting my d2 PIT title in tark today (to go along with my d3 one) I wonder if anyone has ever got PIT title at all 3 levels in one world? (as if anyone would want to or care)
but if i ever give up on the d2 NT, i guess that would be a good reason to move back up to d1 tark. and might be a goal more suited to my talent level.
"Seems like theres 10 or 20 great coaches who could go back to d2 or d3 and do it with minimal effort,....."
oh my goodness you guys kill me with these comments! I agree wholeheartedly that it's much much easier to build a "dynasty" at D2 or D3. And I agree that D1 is much harder in that regard. Because when you recruit you just go all in and sit and wait to see what happens with the roll. BORRRRRRING! But lost rolls happen. Trust me, I know. And EEs can wreck ya!
but in a one season setting, as far as doing great during a season and making a deep tourney run, D2 (and probably D3, I don't play it so I can only assume) is not "easy to do with minimal effort"!
coaches like piman who has lots of D1 success, he has a D2 team. He doesn't win it every season. Just cuz he's a good D1 coach (but wow is here great at D3!). Let's look at cubcub for an example. His Illinois team is outstanding. But he didn't win anything in D2 on the way to that Illinois job. And both these two coaches are fantastic. I'm not bringing them up in a "failure" sort of way. They are the best of the best. I'm saying that they didn't win with minimal effort (I'm sure both guys will get D2 titles if they want to. Just not sure if it's happened yet) .
one thing I feel gets overlooked about D1 to D2 comparisons, at D2 everyone is always on equal footing for the most part. A D+ prestige team in D2 can realistically compete with all the A+ D2 teams for recruits. But at D1, once you get your A+ you're set. There's always some good/bad luck involved with Rolls and EEs, but you're still an A+ D1 team. You'll make up for it next season with another 5 star that only a handful of coaches have a realistic shot at. Again, I'm not talking dynasties and maintaining them for a long time. I'm talking about one season at a time. At D2 you could be competing with hundreds of schools for players. From D1, D2 and D3 levels.
being an elite D1 coach does not mean you can just walk into D2 and D3 and dominate with minimal effort. You'll have to work for that title. There's a lot of good coaches in D2 and D3. Sure, you'll likely do well if you're an elite D1 coach. But doing well and cake walking to titles it's two different things.
sorry for the gil length post. But this one really burns me when I see it brought up this way. I still love ya Dave! It ain't personal! I just defend my D2 guys cuz I know what they're capable of. As I've stated often, all 3 levels are basically 3 totally different games. With different strategies and different obstacles to face.
My last point, I also don't believe that D2/D3 elite coaches can walk into D1 and dominate easily either. Just because they're good at D2/D3. So I'm not being one sided here. But I don't think elite D2/D3 coaches think that way. But I do feel like a lot of D1 coaches have the mentality they can win titles easy at D2/D3
