$h!tty youth sports coaches. For real.

I always found in youth sports that the less a coach screamed at his players, the better the team played. These screaming idiots make the kids play tight and nervous, often encourage teammates to yell at each other. Real a-holes.

I think emphasizing fun and fundamentals is the way to go. I've seen Coaches make their own kids cry on the field during a game for throwing a pick. I'm almost 50 and I don't remember a Coach of mine that didn't make the game fun to play, be it football or basketball. Even in high school when things were more competitive I still had good Coaches. My son has just had the awful luck of having some bad Coaches the last several seasons, even with me on the sidelines as an Assistant. We had some guys in Church League Youth Basketball that were just horrible about teaching kids about teamwork. Instead it was let's get our best kid as many shots as possible...we need to win this rec league game!!I
I could go on about this for awhile, lol. To see my son walk away from a game because it's not fun anymore is just not cool with me.

+1
Back in the Spring I had acquired the funding to start a Youth Sports League centered around fun and fundamentals, not winning and losing.
We were going to have flag football and basketball. I had suppliers lined up for uniforms, fields to play on, pretty much everything you would need. Except kids to sign up, lol. I just could not go up against the established organizations no matter how tarnished their reputations were. In my area alone we have Flag Football Fanatics ( the absolute worst), Optimist, I9, Bo Jackson Elite and Upward. I had 8 kids signed up by the end of July...not even enough for one team. Some day, though...it'll be legit.

To keep the positivity, I'm actually loving this game right now -

Years ago during v1.0, I worked up to a P6 school in Virginia Tech and felt like I had the program in the right direction before the coach of Duke, who was on his way out of WIS (I still remember the user's name), used the 'pay recruit' option (I don't remember what it was called exactly - but it essentially guaranteed you get the recruit in return for essentially guaranteeing you are banned from postseason) to poach my top 2 or 3 recruits for laughs.

I bounced in and out of the game at D2, worked my way back up to arrive at 'Nova and felt like I was, again, putting the program in the right direction, before they updated the game to v2.0 I believe. I lost care for the game. I came back months laters for a one off season at Louisville but couldn't figure out the game and didn't have a lot of free time to do so.

Now I'm at UVA and I'm loving the game. I started off with a horrific D+ roster (where I didn't realize the importance of rescinding the SIM AI scholarships until it was too late) in, arguably, the toughest conference in D1 Knight (highest conference prestige and RPI, but no championships for the conference since I've arrived so it can be debated). I've lost out on recruits when I was the heavy favorite, I've been pushed late by teams of better prestige, and I'm learning about the differences between v1/ 2/ 3 the hard way. Still, I've never enjoyed the game more. I just won the top recruit in my state (#6 overall recruit) as the underdog. I know the percentage mechanic can absolutely ruin a recruiting cycle, but it can also change a team for the better. I've been on both ends in my short time back and, personally, I've enjoyed it.

Does it have flaws? Yeah, I'm not blind to that. Can it be better? Yes, without a doubt, but the same can be said about any damn game. As for now, I'm just loving this game. I'd be surprised if anyone read this far, and I apologize for wasting your time if you did, but I just wanted to contribute to the positive vibes that pallas is putting out there.
Yeah, I agree. The game itself, at least for me, is still just as fun as it always was. I still check my boxscores over coffee every morning with the same excitement. As you said, it's far from perfect, and there are still things that can be fixed and improved upon, but the product is still marketable, if WIS ever decides they want to do it.

I have three teams for the first time in a long, long time. I still enjoy the game immensely.

I think I have a unique take on this.

I was born with a very minor case of Cerebral Palsy and grew up playing wheelchair basketball with kids of various levels of disability. The coaches in every program were so patient and so devoted to making the experience great for the kids. The parents were another story, of course, but the people who were responsible for teaching were great.

After I graduated from college, I came back home and became a coach myself. I don't know if it was because we were dealing with children with disabilities, but there was such an emphasis placed on character-building and sportsmanship. The league is competitive and of course some teams are much better than others and some players are much better than others. As it should be. But the emphasis on character and fun and inclusion underpinned everything we did.

I think we all understand the importance sports can have on children and how the lessons learned in sport can be utilized for the rest of their lives. Personally, I think team sports is even more important for children with disabilities. It's getting better now, but for a long time we were on the outside looking in, unable to participate in a lot of the things our friends were doing. Wheelchair basketball gave me that sense of belonging that I was desperately needing at the time.

I'll take youth sports stories for 200 - I coached boys and girls youth hoops for many years and saw some amazing behavior.

1. 6th grade boys - there was this coach who screamed at his players every second of the game - do this, do that, why did you do that.....so unpleasant that I talked with my players during a timeout - very quietly - about how they should notice that that is not the way to behave. Turned out it was exactly what they needed to hear - my guys had been distracted and bothered by the screaming until I called it out as wrong. We played well, we had fun....I coached em up in practice.

2. 10th grade girls hoops - my team wasnt very good. They were okay athletes, but not at basketball. I had soccer players, field hockey players. But they had fun. Now and then in youth league we met a very serious team. One time the opponent was a school team of some sort that played youth for more practice. They destroyed us. That was fine. What was not fine was in the 4th quarter, we were down 43-11 (and actually we had done well to score 11) and with about four minutes to go they started to press full court. They had not pressed at all before that. I called time out, we talked about how we inbound against the press. It didnt work. I called another time out and I walked onto the court and stared at the score for a count of ten - looked at the other coach - went back to my players. They continued to press. We tried our best. I high fived the opposing players with good game afterward, but did a crisp 180 degree turn before I got to the opposing coach. You just dont do that.

A couple of my players felt bad - I told them that they are team that plays for their school - and if they played us at soccer or field hockey we would crush them. We left with smiles.

I'm doing OK. At the moment, I'm a little bored with the game. That's happened before and I'm still playing.

Just got back from a vacation in my home state of Florida that was carefree due to the sensationalism of the good folks that use a magic 8 ball to forecast weather. Beaches were clear and calm, theme parks empty and the weather just fine. My wife asked me weeks ago if we should cancel and I just laughed. One of these days, meteorologists will discover this thing called the Gulf Stream and realize how it impacts tropical storms.

Just got back from a mini vaca myself. Gatlinburg Tennessee in the mountains for a few days. *** hole coaches suck. HD can become stale if you are in quest of a title and you win 6 in about 6 months, it changes you. Or it did me. I feel like I'm on the back 9 of my HD career now. Pallas' post about wheelchair basketball was a masterpiece. I don't have anything to disagree with shoe about in this thread. Work sucked on my first day back. AB is a circus. I like omelettes with everything on them. And please..... don't forget the salsa!

Gatlinburg is one of my favorite places. Cade’s Cove, Klingman’s Dome, etc. If you can get past Pigeon Forge, it’s close my idea of paradise; on the mainland, anyway.

If you’re getting stale at D2, move to D1. Should be a slam dunk. ;) Having fun is way more important than status (titles), so find stuff you like to do, make challenges for yourself (you know, like trying to win titles with press/zone combo, lol).

I do try to challenge myself in other ways. But only D2. The D3 recruiting process, and the fact that losing ONE single player early in D1 would make me break my phone, i just don't have any interest there personally. If EEs declared before RS1, i would have 7 D1 teams. And not 7 D2 teams. But that's just a deal breaker.

It may not seem an interest to some, but I've mentioned that I've won with every set. Now it's the combos of sets. Like I'm trying the ridiculous triangle/press (which has to be the oddest combo besides maybe fastbreak/zone having a say in that) now at my new rebuild school.

That same school is one of two 1x worlds that i haven't won in. That's a goal as well. Other than that, repeats everywhere is about all i got left on the HD bucket list. I'm a simple guy. And I've always stated i won't be around long enough to get 10. But maybe I'll say 15 now. 10 is within my window I'd assume.

Everyone is different. Those are my goals

Definitely not complaining. Just a guy that knows what interests me and what doesn't. No offense to any D1'ers. And i applaud your recruitment efforts. I'm just not that interested
