I'm doing OK. At the moment, I'm a little bored with the game. That's happened before and I'm still playing.

Just got back from a vacation in my home state of Florida that was carefree due to the sensationalism of the good folks that use a magic 8 ball to forecast weather. Beaches were clear and calm, theme parks empty and the weather just fine. My wife asked me weeks ago if we should cancel and I just laughed. One of these days, meteorologists will discover this thing called the Gulf Stream and realize how it impacts tropical storms.
Just got back from a mini vaca myself. Gatlinburg Tennessee in the mountains for a few days. *** hole coaches suck. HD can become stale if you are in quest of a title and you win 6 in about 6 months, it changes you. Or it did me. I feel like I'm on the back 9 of my HD career now. Pallas' post about wheelchair basketball was a masterpiece. I don't have anything to disagree with shoe about in this thread. Work sucked on my first day back. AB is a circus. I like omelettes with everything on them. And please..... don't forget the salsa!
Gatlinburg is one of my favorite places. Cade’s Cove, Klingman’s Dome, etc. If you can get past Pigeon Forge, it’s close my idea of paradise; on the mainland, anyway.

If you’re getting stale at D2, move to D1. Should be a slam dunk. ;) Having fun is way more important than status (titles), so find stuff you like to do, make challenges for yourself (you know, like trying to win titles with press/zone combo, lol).
shoe hits it on the head about how to stay interested in the game.

This is my 15th year and if I had done nothing but focus on titles, I would have won a handful and then quit a decade ago. Palm Beach Atlantic, maybe the primo DIII location, is boring me to death. I'm not even trying. The game stays fresh (for me) by creating a unique challenge...which I do through oddball school locations...running less-popular OFF/DEF combos and, most importantly, finding a conference with some good guys to build long-term rivalries with.

Whenever I get bored with HD, I know it's time to migrate back to DI Hawaii because it has all the elements to keep me engaged.

I agree about the location thing. We all play to win, but it just depends on which extreme we go. I don't have any of "those" locations either. (PBA D3, grand canyon D2, UCLA D1, etc). But there's some things that just don't interest me. And I'm also ok with retirement, whenever that may come. I don't HAVE to play HD. I'll play until it's not fun. Find things that interest me about it until it's not fun. And then bail. But I'm happy for now.

Yeah, I concede the point about winning. I'd have also quit a decade ago if I went 7-20 every season. We can all find different things to keep us going. If racking up titles motivates someone, great. Personally, I hold my Final Four at Hawaii in HD 1.0, my back-to-back Top 10 rankings at Furman during HD 2.0 and my postseason all-Johnson surname team (at Johnson State, lol...the boxscore was hilarious) in much higher regard than my lone NT championship.

My life is grand. But what the hell is wrong with the world?
$h!tty youth sports coaches. For real.
I think emphasizing fun and fundamentals is the way to go. I've seen Coaches make their own kids cry on the field during a game for throwing a pick. I'm almost 50 and I don't remember a Coach of mine that didn't make the game fun to play, be it football or basketball. Even in high school when things were more competitive I still had good Coaches. My son has just had the awful luck of having some bad Coaches the last several seasons, even with me on the sidelines as an Assistant. We had some guys in Church League Youth Basketball that were just horrible about teaching kids about teamwork. Instead it was let's get our best kid as many shots as possible...we need to win this rec league game!!I
I could go on about this for awhile, lol. To see my son walk away from a game because it's not fun anymore is just not cool with me.
I think I have a unique take on this.

I was born with a very minor case of Cerebral Palsy and grew up playing wheelchair basketball with kids of various levels of disability. The coaches in every program were so patient and so devoted to making the experience great for the kids. The parents were another story, of course, but the people who were responsible for teaching were great.

After I graduated from college, I came back home and became a coach myself. I don't know if it was because we were dealing with children with disabilities, but there was such an emphasis placed on character-building and sportsmanship. The league is competitive and of course some teams are much better than others and some players are much better than others. As it should be. But the emphasis on character and fun and inclusion underpinned everything we did.

I think we all understand the importance sports can have on children and how the lessons learned in sport can be utilized for the rest of their lives. Personally, I think team sports is even more important for children with disabilities. It's getting better now, but for a long time we were on the outside looking in, unable to participate in a lot of the things our friends were doing. Wheelchair basketball gave me that sense of belonging that I was desperately needing at the time.
Absolutely loved this post.

To keep the positivity, I'm actually loving this game right now -

Years ago during v1.0, I worked up to a P6 school in Virginia Tech and felt like I had the program in the right direction before the coach of Duke, who was on his way out of WIS (I still remember the user's name), used the 'pay recruit' option (I don't remember what it was called exactly - but it essentially guaranteed you get the recruit in return for essentially guaranteeing you are banned from postseason) to poach my top 2 or 3 recruits for laughs.

I bounced in and out of the game at D2, worked my way back up to arrive at 'Nova and felt like I was, again, putting the program in the right direction, before they updated the game to v2.0 I believe. I lost care for the game. I came back months laters for a one off season at Louisville but couldn't figure out the game and didn't have a lot of free time to do so.

Now I'm at UVA and I'm loving the game. I started off with a horrific D+ roster (where I didn't realize the importance of rescinding the SIM AI scholarships until it was too late) in, arguably, the toughest conference in D1 Knight (highest conference prestige and RPI, but no championships for the conference since I've arrived so it can be debated). I've lost out on recruits when I was the heavy favorite, I've been pushed late by teams of better prestige, and I'm learning about the differences between v1/ 2/ 3 the hard way. Still, I've never enjoyed the game more. I just won the top recruit in my state (#6 overall recruit) as the underdog. I know the percentage mechanic can absolutely ruin a recruiting cycle, but it can also change a team for the better. I've been on both ends in my short time back and, personally, I've enjoyed it.

Does it have flaws? Yeah, I'm not blind to that. Can it be better? Yes, without a doubt, but the same can be said about any damn game. As for now, I'm just loving this game. I'd be surprised if anyone read this far, and I apologize for wasting your time if you did, but I just wanted to contribute to the positive vibes that pallas is putting out there.
Yeah, I agree. The game itself, at least for me, is still just as fun as it always was. I still check my boxscores over coffee every morning with the same excitement. As you said, it's far from perfect, and there are still things that can be fixed and improved upon, but the product is still marketable, if WIS ever decides they want to do it.
I have three teams for the first time in a long, long time. I still enjoy the game immensely.
And I actually intended to sign up for another 2/day but I actually just forgot. I rarely ever would have two teams years ago.

To pallas’ point, my morning alarm is my phone alarm. So the morning routine on my end is to wake up and open HD to read down the box score. It’s a casual wake up most of the time. The upset losses, I swear, can wake you up better than most coffee can.

If it's a big game, even five years into my WIS career, I'll stay up to see the result and just bite the bullet the next day. If I win, I'm too excited to sleep. If I lose, particularly if it's an upset, I'm too sad to sleep.

I'm a terrible adult...

Joining the program where it was meant I've only had a few relatively 'big' games but I can't say I didn't stay up until 2am. Years back, it could sim as late as ~2:45am, depending on the world you were in, and you better believe I used to stay up when I had a rivalry game or postseason game.

Every morning with my coffee I do my "team rundown", where I count my individual players growth, check their stats and look for anything trending in their game log. I do the same thing in the afternoon as well. For the last 10 years. Then there's the occasional pep talk when we're headed into a big game.

Lo Sfizio on the outskirts of Capri town on the island of Capri - best pizza place I've ever eaten, and one of the most affordable spots to eat on the island. Also have great caprese salad, prosciutto and melon, pretty much everything...

shoe hits it on the head about how to stay interested in the game.

your hawaii programs were sweet. i'm not familiar with all of them, but enough! that final 4 from back in 2.0 was awesome, much more impressive than the vast majority of championships, and im sure much more satisfying on a personal level.

i pretty much agree with all you guys. i tend to get bored of regular order quick and have to mix it up, trying to play something different than usual like trying to get good with fb or zone. or the last several years of my playing, by co-coaching, so i can talk about the game and think about it, but don't have to do much by way of playing :) back in the day it was trying to build a super conference in d2.

for me it was never as much about winning as the pursuit of perfection; when i really have been hitting the bottle hard HD-wise, its been that. i only managed it for a couple years when i started (the pursuit, not the perfection), and then once after a number of years had passed, for 1 more year. it just gets old. and exhausting. i guess i sort of hate the day to day grind part of this game. the only thing that was said that was totally not me is like, the idea of waking up with coffee and wanting to check the game. i basically have come to resent all the cycle times when i have to go do stuff before time X or screw myself. i used to like it, for the first couple years, but the penalty for taking a week off is so bad, i am not a fan of that (not that i could see how one would even fix such a thing). i guess i should really stick to the co-coaching bit... right now im enjoying having 1 team of my own as i learn 3.0 recruiting but i feel like that runway is running out quick!

I love pizza. probably my favorite food unless you count ice cream.
but I have a different take on it. I cant tell you the "best" place because I have almost never had pizza I didnt like. Even love the stuff thats been spinning around in the gas station for 3 days and is all crusty and dried up.
Pretty much feel the same way about ice cream. Cant recall too much bad ice cream that ive had. no need for haagendaas or fancy stuff.

and yes i am same with morning routine. almost always check before i really even wake up. Its been a while since i did the 2am check. but used to do that all the time... especially when recruiting was 3 hour intervals
