In 45 seasons, I've pulled exactly one player in Rule 5 who turned out badass. Amazingly, I got him with the 18th pick. Everyone must have been asleep that year.

Is there a way to predict which future FA's will receive draft pick compensation? I know the game usually goes by overall ratings, is it like 80 rated catcher or 85 rated LF etc...?

Taking over a new team with a terrible previous owner.

even the chaff in rule 5 is better then 40% of the guys on my team.

Ah, I see what you mean. Different situation. I look at that as, "have fun with it." Grab a handful, try some guys you otherwise wouldn't look at. See what sticks.

It's not entirely predictable. It does go by overall ratings AFAIK, but it's those ratings relative to the other players at their positions in the league. So yeah, we do end up with some "How is THAT guy a Type A?" or "How did my guy NOT get compensation?"

Thanks. I need more specifics though.

so I ranked my guys, then altered my draft settings. Then doing that realized I reset the board. So re-did my board again. Set that I wanted to draft one of my 5 guys, set that I wanted my max to be $500k for players, made sure I have the right number of 40 man roster players open, made sure I have the money to sign the guys....... zzzzzzz um. Did I miss anything?

Sounds about right. What do you think might go wrong?

I usually forget something and either draft the wrong people or draft no one.

I hate how the Rule 5 board resets when you change settings, because you change settings based on what players you see on the board lol.

That being said, I’ve done it before to where I set to pick any of my first 3 guys or so, and then don’t pick anyone. I realized that I didn’t have any positions set under position settings. So like you have to put Atleast a 1 for Any, or the actual position of the guy you want to draft, if that makes sense.

Also on draft comp, from what I’ve noticed, these are general ranges I’ve seen compensation by position:
Sp A comp - 77ish
Sp B comp - 74ish
Rp A comp - 73/74ish
Rp B comp - 71ish
C A comp - 72/73ish
C B comp - 69/70ish (haven’t seen these a ton honestly)
1b/corner OF A comp - 77ish
1b/corner OF B comp - 75ish
2b/cf/3b/SS A comp - 79/80ish
2b/cf/3b/SS B Comp -76ish

Like mentioned above, it varies by league. But that’s just generally what I’ve noticed, hope that helps.

I don't know about badass but I can almost always come up with a decent reliever, strong defensive replacement, or a high eye/high power masher in the rule 5.

Same. I always look for a decent reliever, defensive shortstop, defensive catcher, or speedy baserunner. I can usually get at least 1 or 2 that can contribute. Here what I do:

1. Rank the players in a spreadsheet, running 3 or 4 rankings based on pitcher ratings, defensive ratings, speed/baserunning rankings, and PC/arm strength/arm accuracy ratings.
2. From your spreadsheet rankings, decide on how many of those players might actually contribute to your season. I can usually find 3 to 5.Then, based on how many spots you have available, set that many players as Any, not in particular positions.
3. After all of that, then rank the players on the Rule 5 board, set your limit on how far down the board you want to go before you stop, and set max $$$ to $500k.

I used to be able to use Rule 5 regularly in the way people are describing above... the other owners in my worlds have stopped leaving those guys unprotected. I still find a good one every 8-10 seasons but not like I used to.

My new thing is to try to find DitRs—if I’m rebuilding and can waste the 25th roster slot—and develop them. So far this has led to a lot of AAA playoff teams.

So I ended up with 2 really good players (in my opinion) from the rule 5

and

i actually like Gott better Then stone as he can do more in my opinion. Stone I may end up regretting when he strikes out for the 200th time this season.

in the draft I also had ranked

and

Busby is probably better then Stone but I am already strong against left handed pitching and don’t really need a corner outfielder.

I’m kicking myself that I didn’t set to draft 3 players. Randolph looks like a serviceable SUB as long as he doesn’t face lefties and Lee Emilio looks like a MOP or a LRB kind of guy.

but needless to say, lots on the board.

Yes, against right handed pitching, I think Gott can be a good contributor. I think Stone might just end up frustrating you with the whiffs. But he's worth a look.

The other guys look fairly decent, as well. Yes, Randolph could have been decent, but I generally don't like pitchers that give up a lot of fly balls. That said, he has had good success so far in the minors.

How many major league days make up a year of service time? In the off-season, I just traded for this guy who has 2.032 service time, and I would like to keep him in AAA for a while to save a year.

How many ML days into the season do I need to wait before bringing him up?
