Is Benis a commodity?
Hahaha this made me laugh out loud, nice.

I've actually thought poopshoe's use of the word commodity to describe HD players as stupid and just incorrect. HD players aren't really commodities in the true sense of the word.

Im not an expert in this stuff but a commodity is good that that has a price that is set by the global market and manufacturer or brand doesn't matter. Oil can be procured from Texas or Iraq, its still the same stuff.

HD players have very distinguishable tiers of quality as designated by division projection. D1 teams aren't recruiting d3 projected players because those teams desire higher quality players. HD players are more like cars. D3 is a honda civic while D1 is a BMW M5. And 5 stars are Lambos or Rolls Royce. But cars are not commodities. The manufacturer, brand and QUALITY matters and the consumer can choose to pay more for that higher quality, if they wish.

Whether or not you bid on the good is irrelevant here. I just bid on a TV on ebay. Are TVs commodities? Nope. I bid on an antique lamp at a swap meet. Are antiques commodities? Nope.
Haha, look at Benis breaking out google again, always looking for a gotcha. I guess he wants to be forum police now.

Yes, I use the term loosely. No, I don’t think these fake players are actually commodities in the traditional sense (though complete fungibility is not necessary for proper usage). And as I say often, I’d rather the game NOT treat them as commodities.

How about this, if you get your lackeys to stop using the terms “random” and “poach” improperly, I’ll stop referring to this as a commodity game, and call it an economic simulation instead. Deal?

I was randomly poached this morning as a matter of fact. Damn the luck

Wait a tick. You harp on Topdogg and pretty much everyone else for being 100% accurate on using terms loosely or slang or whatever else.

And you've been doing it this whole time with a word you've been spamming the forums with for the past several years and it's totally okay?

Riiiiiight.

Lol, look up any dictionary, and you’ll find I’m using the term in a completely appropriate way. It’s only ambiguous because the term also has a specific meaning in a specific context - the actual, real world global marketplace. So if you’re like a market analyst or something, it’s totally valid for you to say something like “I’m not familiar with your use of this word”. Fair enough. But this is important, my use of the word isn’t a mischaracterization. I’m not painting some aspect of the game in a false light to make people uncomfortable or dissatisfied with it. I’m just using it in a non-technical way, in a non-technical context.

"Its okay when I do it but others can't do it because of my very narrow minded opinion".

Got it.

Hopefully y'all never change. Great popcorn fun.

Let's just all agree that shoe has been misutilizing the words "probability" and "probabilistic" in the forums for a long time...

Rigid thinking is certainly one of the symptoms I exhibit. I don’t pretend otherwise. That’s not to say I never find all sort of alternate narratives valid. There are usually lots of good answers. But there are also usually bad answers too, and I’m not interested in validating those.

I use probability and probabilistic in game context as contrasting antonyms to determinism and deterministic. Or in simpler terms, probability in game setting is use of a range of outcomes with varying likelihood of occurrence; contrasted with a deterministic model, which has set outcomes. Whereas determinism is 0 or 1, 0 being impossible and 1 being certain; probability is 0 to 1 with many possible outcomes.

I suspect you’re referring to the long thread from a year and a half ago where I ranted against the “feedback” feature, which is absolute **** in terms of gameplay for a game based on probabilistic outcomes (possessions). If you flip a fair coin 4 times, and it’s head all four times, the odds of flipping heads the fifth time is still 50%. The feedback feature bastardizes this concept, which is why I hate it, even when it benefits me more often than not (not, it should be noted, in the case of the OP here). That’s how I use “probability” and “probabilistic”.

50.1 beats 49.9 100% of the time - deterministic

50.1 beats 49.9 ~51% of the time - probabilistic

Does this mean this weekend's Benis/shoe camping trip is off?
