a baseball thing..i read something that ted wwilliams and joe dimaggio both said that the greatest pitcher they ever faced was satchell page.
there were exhibition and barnstorming games..im sure they faced him before 1948.

No record of Ted Williams ever facing Satchel Paige before Paige's MLB debut as a 42-year-old rookie. But Williams went 2-for-9 against Paige (with two walks) in his MLB career, famously breaking his bat on a dugout railing after one 8th inning strikeout. That broken bat ended up in Cooperstown. Joe DiMaggio did face Paige in a famous exhibition game in 1936 when DiMaggio was still a prospect. He went 1-for-4 against Paige, including a game-winning single in the 10th off Paige's glove, prompting a Yankee scout to write: “DiMaggio everything we’d hoped he’d be: Hit Satch one for four.” DiMaggio later called Paige "the best pitcher he ever faced, and the fastest." So did Mickey Mantle.

Agree with all of those. As a lifelong Yankee fan, I'll add another one from the Bronx. Don Mattingly...had he not developed back problems, his power wouldn't have likely fallen off. IMO he would have stood a good chance of being in the HOF.

If my memory serves me, Tony C was the youngest ever to lead the AL in HR in 1965 and the youngest ever to 100 career HR in the AL. As a young boy, even though I hated the Red Sox, Tony C was one of my favorite players. Still have his rookie card.

Thurman Munson.

Mark Fydrich.

That the record books are forever screwed up by the steroid era.

That nightime World Series and playoff games means most American young people don't know the game.

That some model was not found to help maintain team loyalty on the part of players - like having MLB negotiate contracts and pay scales with the players' union for certain achievement levels and seniority, rather than individual teams competing with money to get free agents. So players would only leave upon free agency if they were unhappy, or thought they could help another teams somewhere as a challenge, or would find a better fit elsewhere, rather than because someone offered $40 million a year instead of $38.5 million.

The owners ruled for generations with an iron fist. The tables have turned. Hey, at least it isn't the NBA. It won't be long till the fans vote who goes where...what an asylum they have going...

The negotiations in MLB arent nasty like 50 years ago. There's plenty of money to go round...

re - the steroid comment - thats exactly what i was driving at
such a tragedy for baseball - maybe the only sport where athletes from all the eras..at least early 20s could compete and be compared before steroids
and a tragedy for the players who did not cheat esp pitchers.

fidrych is a good addition.

Plenty of money but not distributed evenly. The luxury tax is a joke. Need a hard cap to level the playing field. The small market teams are just a training ground for the big market teams. Once the players reach Free Agency there is no team loyalty, only greed.

Somehow the NHL appears to have the best working relationship between players and owners, the Olympics notwithstanding. ..who knew?

I missed that you have included Munson - AND Roberto Clemente, whom I did not include, and I am sorry to have forgotten him on my brief list.
