Can you beat this heartbreaking loss? Topic

Give me more heartbreaking NT loss stories to help me feel better. I bet you can’t beat this... back-to-back championship opportunity, 69 game win streak, #1 RPI and SOS both years. Going into the ship with my lowest margin of victory being 23 in the NT. Star PG fouls out. Lose by one on a buzzer beater 3PT in OT in the title. I bet you can’t beat that.

I've told this story before. Championship game in the previous version of the game with my cal tech team. We're down 12 with 7 minutes left. Go on a 12 - 0 run capped by my team's first three point make of the season to tie it with seconds left. Other team comes down the court and my senior guard with 70s in athleticism, speed and defense (whichwas really good in the previous version) commits a reach in foul with no time left on the clock. Guy hits both free throws and we lose the title game by 2.

I can't touch any of this title game stuff, but I've lost a conference game on a halfcourt shot (I think I was up 1/2 but might have been tied) that was (1) the team's first/second or so 3 of the year and (2) the player's only career 3pter.

I've got a heartbreaking win story. Season 113 in Knight I lost in the title game with a team that I thought was a pretty good bet to win the whole thing. Wrong, obviously. Season 114, make it back to the title game. I'm scrolling through the PBP and as I get near the end of the 2nd half, I see that it's obvious I'm going to come up short yet again. I'm down like 8 with barely over a minute to play, so in disgust I "X" out of the PBP, to look at the box score, only to see that I'd somehow won by 3.

How, you may ask? A bunch of missed free throws by my opponent, some well timed threes by me, and get this...........another missed shot by him followed by................a FULL COURT HEAVE by my CENTER (!) of all people, to win the game by three at the buzzer! I was actually sick for the guy I played, no way a game should end like that, especially one for the championship. I was really torn, I mean I was glad I won of course but I didn't want to win like that. It just felt......wrong.

Of course, I've also won a title with a team that went 33-2 with one of the two losses being by a tip-in at the buzzer and the other being to.....ready for this.....a Sim team that I was favored to beat by almost 60 points. Figure THAT one out!!! In retrospect, that has to be the biggest upset in HD history. Kind of like D2 Chaminade beating Ralph Sampson's #1 ranked Virginia back in the day. Then again, when the Sim has PF's and C's with Per ratings in the single digits lighting you up from three, there really isn't a whole lot you can do about that. That game was kind of like when you're playing against the computer in a video game and the computer just "decides" that you ain't winning that game. Nothing much you can do to stop that onslaught....

Oh, and I've been on both ends of the 1-16 upset as well. One way feels awesome, the other not so much.

I'm the one (Adama St.) who crushed Sportsbulls spirit with the OT 3 pointer at the buzzer.
Just now saw this thread and it jogged my memory.
I lost a National Championship on a half-court shot at the buzzer ... posted about it.

What is even more ironic/crazy is that Sportsbulls was the first one in that thread to offer me condolences!
And FWIW ,,, we should never have been able to beat his monster D2 teaam - one in hundred result... if not more.
With sincerity I quote " Tough way to lose man, sorry."

Hahahahaha, what’re the odds!?!? That’s amazing. **** (stuff) happens though. In life and in HD. I’m cool with the result. I’m more mad at myself in retrospect as I feel I could’ve coached better.

You deserve the title. You built a hell of a team, knocked off great teams, and out-coached me. Great job man!

Non-conf matchup in the future?

my most heart breaking loss was in season 3, with my NC Wesleyan team where I figured out how to recruit strong D2 players on a D3 team before anyone else did.... my team was a D1 calibur team and was undefeated in the regular season winning all my games by 30+ points.... then getting blown out in the 1st round of the NT by a team that was 14-14 in the regular season. While it wasn't necessarily a nail biter.... it was heart breaking to think I was sure I would get back to back championships and then lose to an inferior team in the 1st round.
