Sad news. I started following baseball just after he retired, so never got to see him play. But for years he and George Kell were my favorite TV announcers. I loved watching the Tigers of the late 70's to early 90's, and Kaline and Kell were a big part of it. RIP.

The gentleman of his era...I always think of him and Stan Musial together.

Roger Angell had a line about Kaline in one of his books...probably Five Seasons...in which he mentions that he (Angell) finally realized the uniqueness of Kaline's name, and wondered whether there was a Spanish player somewhere named A. Cid.

Mr. Tiger. His greatness was matched only by his humility.

i always thought his name was cool so i thought al kaline was cool...his name sounded catlike to me and as a detroit tiger that coincided with the name and i always thought after my home team that the tigers were one of great sounding franchises.
