How important is pitch quality? Topic

Do you have a minimum pitch quality you look at for your major league staff? I've typically gone with 70 as a minimum for the 1st pitch but given more value to pitchers who have higher pitch qualities or more pitches with a higher quality rating.

One person posted once you are looking for this in P1 through P5. 85, 70, 55, 40, 25. I think that is a good way to look at it, but you have to realize nothing in the ratings can be taken in a vacuum. You have to consider other attributes too. Control, vL, vR, GB/FB, and P1-Pn as a whole to determine what type of pitcher you have.

IMHO - Tier 1 - Control and Splits with Tier 2 - Velo, GB/FB, Pitches. You can league average results with guys who have good tier 1 ratings and meh tier 2. Other way around the guy will likely be a 4A player.

Purely speculation based on experience, but I usually eyeball that the guy has at least two pitches in excess of 65+. If not I'm reconsidering their effectiveness.

Extremely important. If I had to put it in order, I would say it goes

1. R split
2. Control
3. P1
4a/4b. L split and P2

This is purely anecdotal, but I have noticed that a guy with pitches 70,65,80 will underperform a guy with pitches 80,70,65, all else being equal.

It depends on what your catcher's PC rating is.

Any pitch rating under 50 is a negative. So I would rather have a pitcher with 3 pitches at 85-70-60 than a pitcher with 5 pitches at 87-72-60-45-25.

My top 3 are R split, control, and GB/FB. After that, I weigh all of the other ratings and throw them into a stew.

(Control = VsR) > > VsL > GB/FB > (P1 = P2). I don't even look at velocity.

I'm not sure this is right (I'm not sure it's wrong either). From my understanding, PC is merely a modifier. Individual pitches aren't actually called. I think each pitch is weighted in descending order, thus a strong P3 isn't going to be as effective as a strong P1.

What about for relievers, is the quality of secondary pitches less important? That is, how about a closer with great splits and control, a P1 of 99, but a P2 of 45 and no other pitches?

There is no right or wrong answer to these questions. You need to look at lots of pitchers whom have good success and there ratings.
