when you say C or D players with good work ethic, i wasn't sure what you meant at first - are you talking about unscouted players basically? before you recruit a player, you really want to scout them - for an unscouted player, you might get info like, hes a D on offense. that means nothing! after you scout, you might get - hes 42 blue perimeter, 45 black athleticism - and those colors translate directly to growth ranges (the blue 'high potential' guy can gain 21-27 points, for example).
armed with the information from scouting, you are *infinitely* better able to evaluate players.
what is the best beginner guide we could point this guy to? i remember OR did an updated beginner guide for a 10 pack at some point, where is that? i think its officially the HD guide - or was at some point - but it was before the new recruiting stuff, and im struggling to find it.
fleck, at the top of this thread, there's a couple posts - guide to new 3.0 release - and how to win in d2/d3. the how to win d2/d3 is from the old way of recruiting, but the ideas are really good - if not a bit advanced, in some cases, for a new coach. that was a cocky albeit amazing coach who wrote the guide, and the info in there in many cases applies 100% today. the guide to 3.0 recruiting is *fantastic* to learn 3.0 recruiting - but it does assume you knew the basics of how to play the game in 2.0.
heres a link i found with some really basic, beginner level stuff - its just organized in terms of questions you might have, less as a guide. this is official stuff, so pretty bland strategy wise, but probably a good resource for a true beginner

there has to be a decent, true beginners guide somewhere... i think... hopefully someone can post it for this guy? if not, i wonder with the increase in newer d3 coaches, if that should be put together - a true beginners guide.
and fleck, last thing ill say - the forums here aren't novella after novella - i'm just completely insane. and type really fast. so don't let this scare you! this is a really cool game - for the first 2-3 years i played, the enjoyment i got from this game was just unreal (i overdid it and burnt myself out...) - however, its definitely got a learning curve on it. it can be a phenomenal experience, its really rewarding and in many aspects, the community is great. but you can also play for 6 months and feel like you are still a rookie! so - be patient - give it a little time to see if this is your cup of tea or not. its worth it - if it is your cup of tea, the payoff is *huge*
