Hans Lobert only managed one major-league season. When you go 42-109, I guess you don't get second chances. This wasn't a good team, and by the Pythagorean they should have been even worse, 39-112. They finished 18.5 games out of 7th place. Only 230,000 fans showed up all season to watch them. The Dodgers could get that in a four-game weekend series nowadays.

No, the 1942 Philadelphia Phillies were not a source of pride in those wartime years. (Nor were their stadium-mates, the A's, who also finished dead last. No wonder Philadelphia fans boo Santa Claus. They've had it rough through the years. But I digress.)

CRTYonker, you made a fine opening pick with the '42 Yankees, a team with several solid pitchers, some lineup stars, and plenty of ways you can use your 7 spots. As I see it, you'll probably spend about half your salary on them. Having any of the remaining teams to stick you with didn't make it easier, because I can't ruin what you've already got. I can only make it a little harder to use them all and build anything decent around them.

Let's start with pitching. The Phillies weren't good at it. Not at all. They did have a young "ace" in Tommy Hughes, who had a 107 ERA+ so he's just marginally above average for his time. He pitched 272 innings. No one has ever used him in the sim. He costs $6.5M, a decent chunk of change in an $80M league. Do you want to find out if he's any good? You might have to, because the rest of these guys are pretty darn awful. You'll have to use some of them anyway, so good luck with that.

The Phils couldn't hit either. They had a team OPS of .595. Take out the pitchers and it's still .618. Their home run leader had 9. One guy had double-digit steals. No one hit over .271. Nary a SLG of even .400 to be found. And only two of their hitters come in under $1M, and both are outfielders. Not sure you'll be able to fill two of those spots with cheap backups, and otherwise you're gonna have to roster a few of these guys somewhere. And they aren't going to make your team better.

So have a blast figuring out which 6 of these guys hurt you the least. The good news is you only have 21 to choose from. Or is that bad news? You'll probably be cursing me under your breath ... and I'll know the feeling in a few hours when I see what I get stuck with. I've seen all the bad teams from these seasons, and there are plenty of nightmares to be had.

I firstly apologize for the delay of my posting. I had to recover from the "gift" of the 42 Phillies. Thank You, redcped: I will "treasure" them always.

Next I get to pay it forward to tkcronin and I believe that I have found a team that can "compete" with the 42 Phillies in ineptitude: the 1932 Boston Red Sox.

Statistically speaking, they were very bad. Their record that year was 43 - 111 although their Phythagorean Record was slightly better at 45 - 109 (enjoy those 2 extra wins). They were last that year in MLB in both Runs Scored and Runs Allowed. The only decent player is firstbaseman, Dale Alexander, and he only had the equivalent of 455 PA/162 that year. They mostly appear to have forgotten to have taken their gloves to the field when it was time to play defense. There are only 3 players under $1,000,000 including only 1 position player. On the plus side, there are a lot of the them as you have a full compliment of 25 players to choose from. Enjoy.

It’s like a beautiful game of Pay It Forward, but with very sharp knives.

Thanks CRTYonker, being a Bostonian it's only right to be gifted a Red Sox team. I was brought up to believe that the Sox would never win it all. And the Yankee fans always liked to remind us by chanting "1918" every time we played them. Luckily that all finnaly ended in 2004. I'm now realizing that we were not alone, there have been many teams that have been really bad for many years.

I am now delighted to gift to Bigscungil the 1952 Boston Braves.

as a yankee fan i think it's funny that you still had to go with a boston team...

on another note, one of my favorite sports fan moments live was watching rivera tip his cap to the fenway fans during the video montage before the ring ceremony in 2005.

Well, geeze the weeze, the '52 Braves suck. I am not sure what I can do with that team. tkcronin, you have made my enemies list. I am currently polishing my bucket auger.

Well, red, I had circled the '42 Phils as my pick for you. Glad you didn't pick it for me. As a Phillies fan that would have been painful. The second pick on my list was the 1972 Texas Rangers. They are all yours. I don't think there is one player on the list that is an upgrade t your current roster.

Enjoy.

Let me say that I almost gifted the 72 Rangers to CRTYonker just because I was afraid of someone giving them to me ... It's really hard to believe a team managed by Ted Williams couldn't hit the ball. At all. Ted must have spent the whole season dreaming about fishing, because he sure didn't do anything with that crop of losers. I think my team name might just have to be Ted Williams Dreaming of Fishing in honor of this pick.

I have to admit that Rivera was always a class act. That was a really cool thing he did that day.

i bet ted could have led that team in OBP... (in his mid 50's)

Oh, probably average and HR, too. No one hit over .259 and only one guy managed double-digit homers.

3 day rotation made a nice selection when he took the 1972 Oakland Athletics with his first pick, with lots of pitching and some adequate OF's. I've been searching for the best team to give him as a bad neighbor. Sure, I could stick him with the '52 Pirates or the '62 Amazin' Mets - but I think I've found a better match. I wanted to find a team that wouldn't offer much hitting help (esp. at C and 2B) or decent pitching. I've decided that team is the 1952 Washington Senators. I can't figure out how this team managed to win 78 games and finish above .500 for the year. I see now why Bucky Harris is in the HOF as a manager.
