Hans Lobert only managed one major-league season. When you go 42-109, I guess you don't get second chances. This wasn't a good team, and by the Pythagorean they should have been even worse, 39-112. They finished 18.5 games out of 7th place. Only 230,000 fans showed up all season to watch them. The Dodgers could get that in a four-game weekend series nowadays.
No, the 1942 Philadelphia Phillies were not a source of pride in those wartime years. (Nor were their stadium-mates, the A's, who also finished dead last. No wonder Philadelphia fans boo Santa Claus. They've had it rough through the years. But I digress.)
CRTYonker, you made a fine opening pick with the '42 Yankees, a team with several solid pitchers, some lineup stars, and plenty of ways you can use your 7 spots. As I see it, you'll probably spend about half your salary on them. Having any of the remaining teams to stick you with didn't make it easier, because I can't ruin what you've already got. I can only make it a little harder to use them all and build anything decent around them.
Let's start with pitching. The Phillies weren't good at it. Not at all. They did have a young "ace" in Tommy Hughes, who had a 107 ERA+ so he's just marginally above average for his time. He pitched 272 innings. No one has ever used him in the sim. He costs $6.5M, a decent chunk of change in an $80M league. Do you want to find out if he's any good? You might have to, because the rest of these guys are pretty darn awful. You'll have to use some of them anyway, so good luck with that.
The Phils couldn't hit either. They had a team OPS of .595. Take out the pitchers and it's still .618. Their home run leader had 9. One guy had double-digit steals. No one hit over .271. Nary a SLG of even .400 to be found. And only two of their hitters come in under $1M, and both are outfielders. Not sure you'll be able to fill two of those spots with cheap backups, and otherwise you're gonna have to roster a few of these guys somewhere. And they aren't going to make your team better.
So have a blast figuring out which 6 of these guys hurt you the least. The good news is you only have 21 to choose from. Or is that bad news? You'll probably be cursing me under your breath ... and I'll know the feeling in a few hours when I see what I get stuck with. I've seen all the bad teams from these seasons, and there are plenty of nightmares to be had.
