Is unoffering a ship really bad... do you get a big penalty?

Penalty in what way? I think the player is less interested in you for sure, but I've done it many times when necessary

I believe there is a big penalty if you are actually still trying to recruit the player after rescinding a scholarship offer. I haven't tried to do that in like five years, but from what I remember I always got removed from his considering list and was essentially dead to him. Not sure if that is still the case but I expect that it is.

No other penalty that I'm aware of (such as to loyalty or coach reputation).

Ug that's terrible. Trying to recruit 4 guys who sign 1st session with 3 first session openings is not very fun.

I did this last season. You lose all credit to the scholarship, and you would have to try to 'unlock' the scholarship again. I have no idea if the recruit will be receptive or not to future recruitment, but you drop off the consideration list entirely, like you've never contacted the recruit before.

I think of it like the redshirt button. Sometimes it just takes a more effort to fix, sometimes it’s a lot more effort and (I think) sometimes the dude loses all interest in you.

A lot of forum misinformation here, ignoring all the shades of grey. I have withdrawn a scholarship from a player, and I am still leading on that player at Very High. The Offer Scholarship button is still an option, and I've not invested a whole lot in him to date. Granted, he is poorly rated.

For other players I have withdrawn a scholarship after having invested lots of points and visits, and I can never get past 0% in unlocking anything again.

Another case of, "it depends".

I think why we have such varying results is it depends on the recruit effort of other teams, if the recruit is receiving no other effort then he’ll probably be fine because even with your negative effort, that’s the only effort he’s received, where vice versa if they are receiving lots of attention and effort elsewhere it will be hard, if not impossible to recover.

But it’s not a death sentence and I’ve read before and read way too many times. I literally just had this scenario where I had too many recruits who wanted to sign before the end of period 1 and wasn’t going to miss out on the guy who I’ve put all my effort into because I ran out of scholarships, so I rescinded a scholarship and have him a few home visits and I’m still very high.

So I’d say just pick and choose and be careful when you do if you still ultimately want the recruit

is it really arbitrary or is it based on the recruit's view of the school relative to their perception of themselves? i at least think it is strongly linked to the latter - even if there is some RNG in there (might be for certain recruits) - but my starting point is, it would be deterministic if we knew the recruit's sense of self relative to the school (not always clear but with some practice you can often make a pretty good guess)

my experience lately is from the high d1 side and i can tell you that consistently, the guys who look up to us, i can pull that ship for nothing. it doesn't even make a dent - not even with just enough AP to unlock the guy and a ship. but in the olden days when i played lower divisions i did this stuff all the time and it works the same everywhere, its all based on the recruit's perception of themselves compared to your level & prestige.

i suspect you guys playing from the lower divisions are mostly going to see the reverse. the d1 recruits who think more highly of themselves are almost definitely going to crush you for your pulling of a ship just like they would a redshirt. however, for d2 coaches recruiting d1 players, i would definitely think it would be a crapshoot. a lot of the players are going to fall into the 'better than you, but not much' camp which might not be so bad while others will fall into the 'YOU want to talk to ME!?!?' camp where they'll essentially tell you where to stick it.

To all potential recruits out there - I find this type of behavior by my fellow coaches despicable. You make an scholarship offer to a player, you stick to it. Just plain rude and unprofessional.

Come play for Coach Benis where you will always have a spot on a roster that is more like a family than a team. Unless of course your defense turns to blue after gaining 1 point, then your *** is gone.

You mislead your recruits as well. You unlock 40 players and then drop bombs on one! Crushing not only the dreams of the leading coach(s), but what about the other 39 players you sent packing? Shame on you!

This was a DII recruit at DII. I had 70 AP on him as well as 25 minutes and a start. I withdrew the ship and got totally booted from his list. He signed with a sim next cycle before I could unlock a ship. Epic.
