Bad Neighbor League Draft Topic

I have the pleasure of giving jpeterso his 3rd team. I have selected the inane 1982 Chicago Cubs to go with the 52 Dodgers & 42 Senators.

3 hitters over $5 million & all play the same positions as the $5mil plus Dodgers. JPete will have to choose or pay hefty price to move them to another position once the season starts.

The Cubs staff has 2 relievers with a pedestrian 1.21 WHIP in the pen & everyone from 1.30 to 1.71. Maybe good enough in a standard progressive, but not here in the Bad Neighbor!

For garbageman8, I gift you the great Ted Williams and the 1952 Red Sox...

Oh wait, this was one of the years he was flying planes in Korea. So you get...ummmm, not very good players. Have fun. On the bright side, Teddy Ballgame had 10 ABs.

ugh, I went back and forth on a few different teams for DodgerDon but I think I'll try to continue to limit his choices with the bat. I give him the '42 White Sox. They have two solid pitchers in Humphries and actually a great Ted Lyons but hitters had an OPS of .662. Their team high in HRs was 7 and RBIs was 60.

I'm picking soxyanks' third team for him.

First round pick was the 72 Reds. You can see the beginnings of the Big Red Machine just a few years away. There's Bench, Perez, Morgan, and Rose. Spid did a good job handing him the 82 Mets. Then I went back and forth between two teams. It was so tempting to add the 72 Mets, but in the end, Tom Seaver said he would absolutely never, ever agree to play for the Reds, so instead I went with the 82 Toronto Blue Jays.

So why did he later play for them

Bringing up bad memories for this old Mets fan. From what I read in the papers, Seaver's wife was friends with Nolan Ryan's wife and Ryan was making way more than Seaver so Seaver wanted way more money and when someone leaked the story to the press it created a firestorm and Seaver demanded a trade. That started a mad week where teams started giving offers. The offer I thought they should take was the Dodgers offer of Don Sutton one for one, ace for ace.

Instead they traded him to the Reds for four young players, Steve Henderson (OF), Pat Zachry (SP), Doug Flynn (2B) and Dan Norman (OF). Henderson and Zachry turned out to be average players but the Mets got very little for Seaver.

Then they traded Jon Matlack the next year for next to nothing and the Mets team that went to two World Series in 69 and 73 was completely destroyed. Painful memories.

June 15, 1977 a day that will live in infamy for Mets fans. Seaver sent packing to the Reds for Zachry, Flynn, Norman, & Henderson. Also the Mets sent Dave Kingman to the Padres for Bobby Valentine that day.

Matlack went 43-45 after leaving the Mets, but the Mets essentially got an aging Willie Montanez & one - time Washington Senator bonus baby Tom Grieve in the deal.

I remember that Dick Young, respected veteran writer for the NY Daily News was a shill for Mets President Donald M. Grant. He wrote scathing articles about Seaver that year that ultimately helped to run him out of town.

The summer of ‘77 in NYC saw a major blackout in July that led to mass looting. The Son of Sam serial killer was still on the loose at the time terrorizing the city until his capture in August of that year.

Quite a year for NYC & the Mets.

I wasn't expecting so many picks yesterday so it will take me some time today to get caught up

Beernoser - what a collection of misfits you have. I am trying to think ahead to the dagger round with this pick, so as to not give you viable players at positions where you are weak, and also not give you good players to replace perhaps some very important players to your team.

I don't want to give anything away here but I do want to point out a few thoughts behind my rationale. For example - Ray Grimes is a mighty fine player. Walt Dropo would do in a pinch. I'm gonna add to that surplus with a solid option of a beginning his prime Ted Kluszewski. I mean, the only thing better than 2 decent/good 1B is 3, right? And, sadly, I don't think any of them have multi-position eligibility.

I wanted to make sure you were set at 3B so Bobby Adams at almost $5M seems to do the trick. He has a .696 OPS but he can at least sorta field (B/B-). The good news is he won't get tired with 731 PAs.

That's pretty much it for the boys that can hit. Up the middle they hit .212 and .244 and the OF is pretty blah with a bunch of 450 PA guys under 3 million. I guess you will have to look elsewhere.

On the pitching side, you do get the durable Ken Raffensberger. He goes 260 innings of 1.18 WHIP/2.81 ERA at the bargain basement price of $6M. He is a lefty though, and his OAV+ is below league average. I'm sure he won't have any trouble with all those righty filled lineups.

I was kind enough to leave you two RPs. Frank Smith and Bud Podbielan combine for 221 innings of about 1.22 whip. They both give up a ton of HRs, but at least they don't let too many guys get on base first!

My grandfather and I played a ton of cribbage growing up. When I was learning how to count points as a young boy, I would always go fifteen-two, fifteen-four, a pair makes six and then pause looking for more points. My grandfather would always say "and let your voice drop" because he counted faster than I and knew I had no more points. This team really could be called Klu....and let your voice drop. In my attempt to set your team up to be as screwed as possible come the dagger round, I gift you the (not very good at all) 1952 Cincinnati Reds.

Brygold has started out with a pretty balanced Pirates team, making this a bit of a challenge. This was tough but let's gift him the 1922 Brooklyn Robins. I mean, how good a team called the Robins be? The answer is not very.

This probably gives you an upgrade at 2B and some similar OF's to what you have. Lots of innings if you need, they're just expensive and average. And I hope you don't need help at SS, because you won't find it here.
5/4/2020 11:35 AM
I think with what spid has going on the perfect match for his Cards and Pale Hose would be the 72 Brewers pitching isn't terrible but average at best. Most importantly you have the great Brock Davis that led the team in batting average that season.

No idea who is up next.
5/4/2020 5:55 PM
that'd be me....

Peekey rocked hitting with his first choice... 62 yankees with 5-6 mil players at 2b, ss, 3b and all three outfield spots all that with a good howard behind the dish. also has a couple of pitcher choices... his 22 A's followed suit with 4-5 mil ss, 3b and outfield. not so much pitching.

i will gift you the 62 red sox and more 4-5 mil ss, 3b and outfield. they come with two more cheap 2b bringing your total to 4 which should help... the 4.16 team era is better than i would have liked though the two best have one without 0 performance information and the other is a 127 inning reliever.

kentol is now up

You have to like the 72 Orioles. Great pitching, good position players, but they can’t hit well.
62 Mets certainly won’t help there, thoughThomas can slug.
Let’s add the 1972 Angels
No starting C, no backup 2B, SS, 3B. Hitting line. .250/.302/.342. Not much offensive help
However, your SP will be loaded, maybe even with the likes of Nolan Ryan and his $9.7mm salary.

Have fun with your roster

Chazzzzzz chose the 1932 Yankees. It's a team with lots of good hitting position players but not much quality pitching (with the exception of Red Ruffing and Johnny Allen). His 2nd team (the 1922 Phillies) has some good players available but also provides little pitching help. I think the best way to cause him some problems is to stick him with another team that has weak pitching and little help at SS or 3B. I'll give him the lackluster 1962 Cubs to play with. Of course, if he can't find any pitchers with his last choice he might be able to afford both Ruth and Gehrig on his final roster...
