Given the state of things in the country right now, it feels appropriate to dust off this thread. I'd love for it to become a positive place again, where we can just hang out and chat and not feel the weight of the pandemic and the social unrest surrounding us.
So I ask again, as I did back in September, (which feels like a decade ago now): How are you?
Feels like forever ago! I’m good. My school year is coming to an end and I’m allocating my productive time to an internship I landed and to preparing for the college applications process. How’re you Pallas?
Where are you applying? I only applied to three schools: Southwest Minnesota (I got in), Oklahoma State (I got in and attended), and Arizona (I didn't get in).
I'm well. On a new diet, which sucks, but I'm hoping it'll help me shed the pounds I've put on the last three or so months. And my brother is waiting on his COVID test results. He got exposed to it while on the job. He doesn't have any symptoms so we're all hoping he's good.
I’ve got a list of 20 I’ve still gotta cut down (hopefully the virtual tours I do in the next couple weeks help), but right now my favorites are Duke, Michigan, USC, and MIT (probably in that order as of now). Wisco is cool too, my mom went there. That’s up there as well. I’ve visited all of those except USC, but I’ve done a lot of research on USC compared to other schools I haven’t visited. I still have to visit most of the schools on my list though so it might totally change. I probably won’t get to visit before applying, so I’m gonna take the Hoops Dynasty D3 recruiting approach of going wide net and seeing which schools I get into and visiting after, lol. I likely want to go to a great school that has the college experience too, but idk, we shall see.
Congrats on your diet! I’m a pretty skinny kid, and I’ve been working out a ton during quarantine and it’s a great feeling. If it hasn’t yet, the diet will feel that same reward soon.
Good luck with your bro. Hope all is well.
Wow. That's a pretty impressive list of schools there, congrats. I did a lot better in college than high school; I was lazy in high school, playing video games and hanging out with friends instead of doing homework or studying. My time at OSU was great, and I earned two degrees, but I wish I had given myself more options. So good on you for having some great options. I'd go to USC for LA alone, but that's just me. :)
Keep us updated as you go through the process.
Agreed, very impressive list. Had a friend from high school that went to MIT (back in the early 90's). Cost of living there is outrageous as I understand. LA, uggh, you can keep LA. Not a fan of big cities. As a Duke fan since 1985 and someone who went to high school about 30 miles from there (used to go watch the Durham Bulls play all the time when I was a teen), I'm a little biased as to which school I would choose. I was accepted at UNC-Chapel Hill but being a Duke fan I just couldn't force myself to attend the enemy school. Didn't really want to go there anyway but I applied and got accepted more to **** off the rich, preppy kids who wanted to go there but couldn't get accepted. And boy, were some of them ******, heh heh!!
Yes, as Pallas said, keep us posted and congrats to you on even having the option to go to such prestigious schools!! From reading some of your posts, you're obviously a very intelligent and well grounded teenager. Props to you and to your parents (operating under the assumption that they are still both alive and involved in your life. My apologies if they aren't) for doing such a great job raising you right. I weep a little less for the future....
Thank you guys very much. Very kind words. I do owe most of it to my parents, I am very grateful for what they have done for me. We'll see what happens and where I end up getting in and I'll update throughout the process. It's kind of a crapshoot after a certain point so I'll be happy wherever I go.
I'm from Chicago, so the big city of LA doesn't daunt me too much. I like that USC isn't like NYU, for example, meaning it has it's sectioned off sorta campus, if you know what I mean. One of my early decisions for evaluating schools was that I wanted a campus, which took schools like NYU out. Just a personal preference.
And about what you said earlier, I was similar freshman year. I had a pretty tough transition from grade school since I had a lack of good study habits, and I just would procrastinate a **** ton. I still procrastinate sometimes obviously, but I try to live by the "work hard, play hard" saying. I study hard during the week and then party hard/have fun on weekends. The transition happened freshman year for me because I had this eye infection and had to miss a lot of school, so it was almost a blessing in disguise.
I'll keep you guys updated, this year is gonna be unique for applications because corona, so it will be interesting. Thanks again for the kind words.
