Just curious, in your time on WIS, which players have you changed your opinion in selecting them? Either way and why the change? Either you stopped picking them, or you decided on using them when you had avoided them before.

I used to swear by 1914 Steve Evans. He’s relatively cheap, makes some + plays, and you can always rely on him to produce. One day, I saw that my team was leading the league in BA and SLG, but mediocre in runs scored, and I complained about it. It was then, another HOF told me I was leading the league in GIDP. I hadn’t even noticed cuz I never used the “extended” page on team rankings. It usually consisted of a bunch of numbers I didn’t understand, but I saw that Evans was a major contributor to that. Now I refuse to draft a player under 70 speed, and I’ve replaced Evans with usually a Rod Carew.

Years ago my favorite OF was 1895 Sam Thompson, 1900 Honus Wagner, and 1927 Harry Heilmann. As my teams have evolved to include better defense, range, and faster speed scores I've gone away from the high-AVG XBH guys like that and find it hard to use them at all now.

I've been playing this game for years, and until now I was never even aware of the "extended" stats section.

Thanks a lot d_rock, another stats rabbit hole for me to go down and get lost lol.

This post has a rating of , which is below the default threshold.
I used to love building teams around cheap OBP (tenace, zobrist, dummy Hoy, yank robinson) and high avg doubles hitters (Evans, Jose Ramirez, bill mueller, Henry Larkin). I also got sick of double plays and single-walk-walk scoreless innings. I took the more modern approach - I will still dabble with these guys but have definitely shifted more towards HR hitters (Greenberg for Evans, the babe for Larkin, etc) and speed/range. I try not to over-commit either way, so I can match up vs any type of opponent. I guess it's more of a barbell strategy; Instead of having more balance I try to have a full squad of guys that may be elite vs different types of opponents.

bheid I am with you, one of the WIS losers. The Sim is particularly cruel to me in leagues that I created. I have won a few divisions and have some seconds and thirds. Usually I am fourth, and always in my own leagues.

I have nothing to add besides I had no idea - after all these years - about the extended rankings/leaders. Just spent an hour going through my teams.

Is this a new alias for you. Your record is too good for a newbie.

The one player I don't use anymore is Barry Bonds. His cost-benefit analysis has to be about -378! Doesn't matter what year I select of Bonds, he never performs.

On the other hand, 2001 Paul Lo Duca is my go to catcher. He is a bargain compared to some of the other expensive seasons of catchers, plays stellar defense, and seems to always hit for average and power. He's the total package behind the dish! I'm taking 2001 Lo Duca over 1993 Chris Hoiles and Rick Wilkins everyday of the week!

nope, I only use the one account. I only manage 1-3 teams at a time so I do most of my "testing" by reading the forums and assessing other teams in my leagues. I spend a lot of time constructing each team, and usually start with an iteration that was my most recent successful roster, which I may tweak over the course of a month or two as I look at more of what does and doesn't work for others. Each 24 team sample in an OL gives you a lot of good data!
