Amid Turbulent Start, Iguodala Embraces New Point Guard Role
Cleveland, OH -- Andre Iguodala says he isn't a point guard, despite being 98 to 100% effective at the position.
"I've never played point guard before. Traditionally I'm used as more of a point forward, 3&D kind of guy. But, of course, I'm willing to do whatever it takes to help this team win. I looked at my player card the other day, and it said I was 98% effective at point guard. I didn't even know that, and I've been me for over 30 years!"
The experiment is still in its early stages, but already there have been encouraging signs. Space Is The Place, who entered the season with low expectations, has started to turn around its 5-13 start with a 5-2 road trip, capped off with a 160-139 rout of the conference leading Captain Savage I. Iguodala had started 21 out of 25 games. Rashard Lewis, whose $6.5 million salary comes with expectations, admits he has had to be patient with all of the lineup changes.
"I started like four games and coach pulled me. Then I played nine minutes in a week. Now I'm averaging 13.6 minutes. I have no idea what's coming next, but hey, we're winning again. I'm with it."
This League Is Cray Cray seems to be hitting their stride as well. After an embarrassing 7-13 start, the team has won four out of its last five games. Iguodala seems to be the biggest reason.
"I made a mistake early on in thinking I wanted a defensive stopper on the floor at all times. We really needed the flexibility and intangibles Andre brings. Sure, he's a little out of his comfort zone, but with Nikola and Karl, we have the perfect pieces for positionless basketball. Our point guard is really our seven foot power forward. Andre at point just gives us the ability to play him together with Rodney and Serge, and that's a huge way to start and finish a quarter," coach/GM bds9992 said on Wednesday morning.
"It's still early. I know fans have had to be patient with us, but we're less than a third of the way through the season. I think people are going to like what we have cooked up."
