you can't put a "<---should be higher" next to Pepperdine, npb?

You have to realize the baseline wasn't set as an all time grade.
When this game rolled out around 2002-2003 it was based on recent success.

Boston College had 27 wins in 2001 and was ranked #7.

Stanford gets an A+ for four straight top 10's between 1998-2001. Over the past decade they're probably a sub .500 team in the Pac 12. Revise down to B?

Wake Forest was coming off three straight top 10 finishes. Tim Duncan does that for you. If the baselines had been set a few years earlier Wake may have been an A+.

Would love to see a floating baseline introduced — taking into account last 50 or 60 seasons. If someone wants to build a dynasty at a small school, let them build up the baseline by having long-term success.

Illinois might be the best example of this.

Was a tough 10 years, but I think this year we will finally be back. Shame I live in Florida and COVID exists.....

Only 10 years? I don't remember Illinois EVER being "A+" good. So I agree. The fact they're an A+ is a crime against basketball fans everywhere. At least with a team like UConn, who isn't elite now, they seem to have some random peaks every now and then.

I remember like 2 Illinois seasons that were good. In all my 39 years. And because of how long ago it was, I can't really even remember when those 2 seasons were played.

2000-2005 we were really really good. A couple buckets from undefeated national champs.

Several teams ( Illinois and Stanford come to mind. ) just happened to be good when they assigned baseline prestige.

Illinois Basketball
2001 Sweet 16
2002 Sweet 16
2003 lost in second round
2004 Sweet 16
2005 lost national championship game

Looking back, I remember that 2005 team. Very solid. Also feels like that was the 80s! Haha. Even with that era being pretty good for Illinois, they haven't always been good, before and after that. And at the time baselines were put in play, in my opinion, it's kinda easy to give A+ to the Duke, UK, UCLA, Kansas, etc. I still feel like personally Illinois is a tough A+ to hand out.

A decent comparable example is Michigan. They won the title in 89 I think it was. Fab Five came thru in 92 and made two title games. And they also had a knock off low budget fab five type of group, that followed the originals shortly after (Robert Traylor, Maurice Taylor, Louis Bullock, and juco Brandon Hughes!). That group never did much anyways. But my point is, as far a prestige goes, I feel like it's supposed to be based on the the depth and consistency of a program. Whenever HD put these baselines in play (some of you probably know exactly when. I do not. But I'll estimate it was in the 2002 to 2004 range), Michigan surely started to fade by then, but they had a nice decade prior.

So it's odd to me that a Michigan is a B after fairly steady success in those recent years. Compared to Illinois having a high peak but maybe not as much consistency.

Like someone else mentioned, Wake Forest could've been an A+ using the logic they used in giving Illinois an A+. But I'm just rambling. Overall the baselines aren't horrible for a game that has outdated variables. Illinois just seems to be the stand out. But this leads me to the topic of my next forum thread.......

So I’ve been at Fordham for 10 years and my prestige is a B. Am I at a disadvantage to say a Duke? I thought all teams were the same or does powerhouse schools have built in advantages?

great run at Fordham, but yes, you are at a huge disadvantage compared to Duke and the Big Six conferences. The advantage shows during recruiting.

Fordham has a baseline prestige of D. To ever get it to an A would be a huge accomplishment and would require consistent deep runs in the NT.

I like to think of the baseline prestige as having a rubber band around it. The farther you move away from it, the harder it becomes to move. But it's somewhat easy to move back towards it.
