One thing that I personally overlooked about scouting, that I pushed aside in MY head, is the Public Camps. I never ever use them. But for a coach on the east coast, you can do the Cali camp and then assistant, and then you're getting players scouted along far enough to L2 or L3, and you can see preferences. From there, you can make good playable decisions.
For the longest, I would see Mrslam in Alaska, and I'm in SC, and I'd see him show up on players in my backyard with "far from home" preferences. Then I'd go to, say, Delaware. And I'd see him on another player with far from home preference. And I'd flip out in my head thinking something foul was going on. Because in my head, I thought how in the hell a coach in Alaska can 1) find two random recruits in two random east coast states 2) that are good! And 3) that BOTH have the far from home preference?
That use to drive me nuts! But then I thought about what I mentioned above...... Public Camp, FSS those states from that public camp, and then assistant or individual scouting.... that is a method to get it done. Even if it seems unorthodox to some of us who do not feel that is an "ideal" scouting strategy, it IS a way to validate the results I've seen.
Also a big one, not in mrslams case (he's a great coach), but not everyone that plays this game is "good" or "efficient" or whatever word you wanna use. Some coaches may just throw a bunch of crap out there and see what happens, when it comes to scouting. Something else we need to keep in mind
